Nuance acquires eCopy
Nuance has completed an acquisition of eCopy. Apparently inked on September 30th, the Nuance acquisition shouldn’t be surprising in this rather accelerated time of consolidation. In fact it seems compression in our industry is hitting a fever pitch these days with acquisition news abound. We ponder on a daily basis, who is next, what makes sense, and who can afford to acquire whom?
In the recent past we have seen:
- Xerox acquire ACS – 6 billion
- Dell acquire Perot Systems – 3 billion
- HP and Canon partner for product
- Nuance acquire X-Solutions
- Kodak acquire Bowe Bell and Howell
- HP acquire EDS – 14 billion
- Ricoh acquire IKON – 1.6 billion
- Konica Minolta acquire Danka – 240 million
Nuance (then Scansoft) themselves have been on an acquisition path over the years, albeit a good bit in the speech recognition space (the buyout of Lernout and hauspie for Dragon, Dictaphone, Philips, IBM Speech, Jott). The eCopy acquisition should position them securely in the office solutions space with an emphasis on enabling MFP capture. The product lines are complimentary and we are told the product names will remain for the forseable future.InfoTrends does plan a more in-depth analysis on this latest acquisition.
The terms of the agreement were in the press release:
The acquisition is a natural extension of Nuance’s existing document imaging business, and will enhance profitability within the division. Under the terms of the agreement, net consideration was approximately $54 million in Nuance common stock. The acquisition will be accretive on a non-GAAP basis in Nuance’s fiscal 2010.
