The Rise of Digital B2

Personally, I always believed in the potential of B2 digital since it become mainstream at drupa 2012 with several vendors showing or previewing products. Of course, new product concepts often take longer in hitting the market than expected, accordingly it took some time for real placements to arrive at customer sites. In our research we already identified a number of benefits these presses bring, and therefore it was no surprise to see installations rise quickly for several years.

For 2018 we feared to see some slowdown, as the printers with investment interest should have already made their calculation by then whether there is a business case for a B2 digital press or not. But it seems there is quite a bit of continuing interest for the devices, and 2018 placements held up reasonably well, despite drupa 2020 looming large. There are ongoing improvements on the existing devices, but there will be a lot more choice in models at drupa 2020, including next generation improvements on existing ones. But it seems that even in the meantime companies interested in B2 still find new opportunities, business cases, or are still only beginning to explore the capabilities of existing devices.

Print On Demand Forecast shows high growth in Colour Inkjet

Keypoint Intelligence – InfoTrends just launched their latest digital printing forecast for the POD market. For years we have been tracking and forecasting digital production printing markets, including placements, installed base, print volumes, equipment, service and supplies revenues. The data can be broken down by multiple device classes and features to allow for further insights. Our latest POD forecast has 2018 as base year and looks at developments until 2023.

It is always interesting to see how types of devices with a small number of placements can have a big effect on other metrics, such as print volumes. Continuous feed (CF) colour inkjet started to gain traction in 2008, and while sales crept up, the total number is barely reaching 291 units in the US and about 160 in Western Europe. This even includes counting these devices by engine, which means the number of installed print lines is about half. It pales against 12,000 (WE) to 16,000 (US) toner-based devices installed in 2018, even when excluding entry level devices.

Looking at print volumes we see how the small group of CF inkjet colour devices already has a big impact on colour volumes. By 2018 inkjet print volumes overtook colour toner volumes, mostly due to the impact of CF inkjet devices, which contribute about 95% to the colour inkjet print volume.

CF colour inkjet will be a major driver not only in the future growth of inkjet impressions, but for colour impressions in general. Although we expect the colour toner volumes to increase by 10 to 15% by 2023, the colour inkjet volumes are expected to grow by around 80% between 2018 and 2023. This is leading to an average annual growth in the range of 8 to 9% for all colour digital impressions. Not only because of the recent success in CF inkjet sales will the US remain the larger market, the US market has a larger potential in replacing black & white volumes as well. Converting digital black & white volumes into colour has been a big driver in the past, but offset conversion and application growth will drive this colour growth more and more.

The dominance of CF colour inkjet will wane somewhat in the future as more cut-sheet inkjet devices are launched and prove to be very productive. We expect drupa 2020 to be a major launch pad. Still, even by 2023 the vast majority of inkjet print volumes will be contributed by the continuous feed devices.

Reflections on Ricoh Interact 2019

The Ricoh Interact 2019 event took placed early June in Denver CO.  The three-day educational event enabled print service providers (PSPs) to connect with industry experts, fellow print professionals, and Ricoh leadership and product developers to help grow their business. Keypoint Intelligence – InfoTrends (InfoTrends) analysts were on hand to attend the show. Topics at Ricoh Interact varied, with focuses on support software, wide format, inkjet, and toner. All of these topics were being addressed by category – Ricoh had divided the event into Business Development, Operational Excellence, Print Solutions, and a Ricoh ProcessDirector User Group.

Fuji Xerox Iridesse – Two specialty colours is better than one

Less than a year ago, InfoTrends published a multi-client study: “Beyond CMYK: The Use of Special Effects in Digital Printing”. Not only did we find that many printers voiced a strong interest in specialty colours and the desire to have several effects as an option, they also indicated that having two specialty colour stations in the press is their preferred option.

Less than a year later, Fuji Xerox launched the Iridesse Production Press at the Fuji Xerox Premier Partner Conference on the 14th of November in Bangkok for the Asia Pacific market.

For the first time in dry toner production printing, a print engine has been equipped to print six-colours, adding two colour channels to complement process colour print with different specialty colours, including metallic, in a single pass. The Iridesse houses up to two additional specialty toners of gold, silver, clear and white, in addition to standard cyan, magenta, yellow and black. One specialty colour is in front of the CMYK units and one behind, therefore the Iridesse can underprint with one specialty colour, and overprint with another (or the same) in one pass.

Fuji Xerox also revamped toners. CMYK toners are made of Super EA Eco toner, which is Fuji Xerox’s smallest particle size toner to date, citing a particle size of 5 micron for the colour toner. The Super EA Eco toner is able to fuse quickly at a low temperature, and is able to evenly transfer six layers of toners. Another patented improvement is flat metal flakes being embedded into the metallic toner particles. The flat metallic flakes should improve the shininess of metallic prints, and some improvement over the gold toner of the Color 1000i can be noticed – although digital metallic print remains far less shiny than foiling or the like.

A unique feature of the Iridesse is being able to print hues of metallic tones in one pass, by printing silver or gold first and overprinting it with CMYK. Other toner printers would need multi-pass printing, and in offset printing each of the metallic hues would need to be mixed first. This can reduce the effort drastically in hitting metallic effects beyond plain silver or gold. The press supports metallic colours found in colour catalogues such as Pantone Metallic and Pantone Premium Metallic. By using these colour swatches, the operator can reproduce colours similar to Pantone metallic colours by simply designating the colour codes. Also, since the press offers more hues than found in the Pantone swatches, Fuji Xerox has a range of predefined metallic colours on top.

A New Entry in the Zone of Disruption: the Canon Océ VarioPrint i200

Many of you will be familiar with the phrase “the Zone of Disruption.” InfoTrends has been using it to describe an interesting gap that has formed between two product classes: cut-sheet toner-based printers and roll-fed inkjet printing systems. The roll-fed inkjet models are extremely productive, but also carry with them a price tag of more than $1 million. The cut-sheet toner-based products are much more affordable, but typically don’t offer speeds much faster than 150 pages per minute. InfoTrends defined the Zone of Disruption as an opportunity for products with price points below $1 million, speed faster than most electrophotographic cut-sheet color printers, very competitive running costs, and production-oriented features (such as integrated finishing and advanced front ends). A handful of products have appeared in the Zone of Disruption over the past few years and this week a new one joined the fray: Canon’s Océ VarioPrint i200.

In most ways, the VarioPrint i200 is very much like the i300. It looks like it, has the same footprint, and virtually all of the same features. Two aspects differentiate the two products. The i200 runs at 194 letter size pages-per-minute (ppm) and the i300 runs at 294 ppm. There is also a significant price differential. Canon reports that the i200 is priced 20% below the i300. Although Canon did not announce pricing, InfoTrends expects that this would put the list price of the i200 at somewhere between $600,000 and $650,000. The i200 will be available in the U.S. in June through Canon Solutions America. The two products now form a product family that Canon is referring to as the Océ VarioPrint i-Series.

HP Inc. Unleashes Next Generation A3 MFPs to Disrupt $55B Copier Market

On September 12th in conjunction with HP Inc.’s announced acquisition of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.’s Printer Business the company also announced an extensive line of A3 Laser and PageWide MFPs and services aimed at disrupting the $55B copier market. According to HP,  As part of its strategy to reinvent business printing these new products enable their partners to sell and service more cost effectively while delivering customers affordable color, reliable performance and industry-leading security.

The new portfolios of MFPs include three PageWide and 13 LaserJet platforms available in 54 different sku numbers with a variety of finishing options, including an in-cave stapler stacker, hole-punch and high capacity staple/booklet maker.

According to HP, the new PageWide Enterprise and Pro series will offer best in class print speeds and lower energy consumptions than similar priced lasers in their class such as:

  • A 55% reduction in carbon footprint of printing
  • Utilize 73% less energy usage than laser printers
  • Generate up to 95% less supplies and packaging waste than comparable lasers

The new HP PageWide products are designed for A3 output and will range in print speeds from 40ppm up to 60ppm. Some of the new features include correct order face down output, easy to replace supplies and built in servicing and diagnostic system as well as the new finishing accessories listed above. Product availability for the PageWide Pro is scheduled for spring 2017 while the HP PageWide Enteprise devices will be available fall 2017.

HP LaserJet A3 MFPs

The new LaserJet A3 MFPs will be available in both color and monochrome with printing speeds ranging from 25ppm to 60ppm. In addition, HP states the new LaserJet’s will have some of the longest life components and fastest repair times among A3 laser devices in the industry, thanks to fewer parts and field replaceable units (single components that allow for a quick change at a customer site, rather than replacing multiple individual parts, as is the norm for traditional A3 models). Availability is scheduled for fall 2017.

Smart Devices & Security

In addition to the A3 MFP announcements, HP also highlighted their Smart Device Services; a set of cloud tools and device-based sensing capabilities designed to integrate with third party device monitoring and service management tools. The Smart Devices Services (SDS) are compatible with any HP printer and MFPs which include FutureSmart firmware introduced in 2012 and later. HP believes SDS will enhance service efficiency for their partners’ fleet and improve up-times by providing predictive service alerts to dealers, allowing them to know the current issue, as well as those that may arise soon, before deploying service personnel, thus reducing the incidence of repeat visits. The new services will be available to qualified HP channel partners as no additional cost for all contractual devices using HP original supplies.

InfoTrends Forecasts Growth in A4 Color MFPs & Business Inkjet Shipments through 2020

 InfoTrends forecasts continued growth of A4 color MFPs and high-end business inkjet placements through the 2020 forecast period in both North America and Western Europe regions. While the overall markets are mature, InfoTrends believes there are pockets of growth opportunity specifically within the A4 Color MF 45+ppm segments and Business Inkjet specifically page-wide technology moving forward.

The market will continue to shift from SF laser printers to multifunctional products and from monochrome to color engines. In 2015, SF printers represented 51% of all Laser unit shipments in North America, by 2020, InfoTrends forecasts SF printers will account for only 46% of total unit shipments. In Western Europe, SF Printers accounted for 51% of all laser placements in 2015 and is forecast to decline to 46% in 2020.

In North America Color Laser A4 MF placements in the 45-69ppm segment are forecasted to grow at a 16.6% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) while in Western Europe the growth rate is expected to be 4.1%.

 Business Ink Poised for Market Growth

Business Inkjet devices continue to boost the market for inkjet devices. Whilst consumer inkjet offers the highest unit placements, these have been declining year-over-year for a considerable time. There has been a shift, even by consumers, into the lower business serial inkjet segments thanks to higher value features such as WiFi, additional paper handling and high yield cartridges. InfoTrends forecasts steady growth within the high-end Business Inkjet segments (Segments 3 & 4), in both North America and Western Europe where opportunity exists for new technologies such as page-wide inkjet to offer alternatives to laser-based devices in terms of speed, acquisition and ink costs especially within the sub 20ppm laser segments. The most recent forecast shows an expected long term decline in placements of laser-based devices and an increase for business inkjet into incremental locations within these segments.

Xeikon – the new digital printing solutions division of Flint

On Friday the 20th of November the news broke that the Flint Group has bought Xeikon from previous venture capital owner Bencis, almost two and half years after they bought the digital print and platesetter business from Punch International.

Xeikon will continue to operate in its existing lines of business and will now become a new division known as Flint Group Digital Printing Solutions. Even in terms of personnel, continuity is sought, with Xeikon CEO Wim Maes staying as president of the division. The deal needs the approval of European competition authorities, which is expected by end of 2015 as there should not be any concerns about the transaction.

In some ways the acquisition marks a U-turn for Flint after it sold its nascent Jetrion inkjet division to EFI in 2006. EFI paid around $40 million as its first investment in inkjet printing, in the process starting a new line of business, while digital activities pretty much stopped at Flint. Now Flint Group feels it is ready to throw their hat again into the digital arena, possibly seeing the success the Jetrion business is having today. A bigger driver is likely the changed ownership that Flint Group itself is now experiencing. Since 2014 Flint has been essentially an equity capital owned business, owned by Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division in partnership with Koch Equity Development. Prior to that, Flint had grown by acquisition and merger into a leading position in litho and packaging inks. To this day, Flint continues to acquire other ink businesses to consolidate its position.

Production placement growth in 2014 – but watch the segments

InfoTrends just published the 2014 production placement numbers for the U.S. and Western Europe. In both geographies we had some growth in placements. In general Europe showed a much better growth driven by a stabilizing economy in 2014, while growth in the U.S. was marginal, based on the fears of a slowing economy. Of course growth rates differ not only by geography, but also by product segment. One of the fastest growing segments in 2014 were mid-volume color devices, the type of devices typically used at high-end print rooms or quick printers and small to mid-size commercial printers. Installations grew by 29% in the U.S. and 33% in Europe in 2014. This is no mean feat in print market under pressure.

For a meaningful tracking of growth or decline in a market, as well as market share overviews, we try to define market segments containing products that compete against each other with similar features, price points and user profiles. Segmenting products can be a tough task however.
