The channel is vital to the document technology industry as it serves the main backbone of small and medium sized customer businesses. As the office equipment market adapts to new market trends such as changing work styles which are more IT-centric, the channel’s portfolio needs to adapt to support “smarter” workplace trends as well as compete with the IT channel. At the same time, we have observed a consolidation of the office equipment channel as customer needs shift to more IT facing technology. All resellers must invest in digital capabilities to offset the perceived threat of declining print volumes and digital conversion.

New Research Document Scores OEMs on MFP Platforms, Apps, Cloud Readiness

Recently, Keypoint Intelligence analysts published a new Market & Vendor Insight report: MFP Platforms, App Ecosystems, & Cloud Readiness. In this document, we identified the trends surrounding multifunction printer software platforms as well as their associated app ecosystems and cloud readiness features, laid out the competitive landscape in this area, and showed how major OEMs performed in our latest platform and apps ecosystem evaluation (for which cloud readiness is a new scoring rubric).

As a basis for this evaluation, we surveyed the leading document imaging equipment makers in the United States and Europe, and conducted independent research to determine the progress path of MFP software platforms and their associated app ecosystems. Evolving Photographer Types Portend the Future of Camera Ownership

InfoTrends conducts annual consumer surveys to track changes in digital photography behaviors. Over time, we have observed a number of important trends including the evolution of the type of photographer that digital camera owners consider themselves to be, from those who rarely take photos to casual/snapshooters, memory keepers, hobbyists and advanced hobbyists.

The type of photographer that consumers assign to themselves depends on their state of mind and their stage of life. Camera owners with a strong interest in photography tend to fall into the hobbyist or advanced hobbyist segments. Parents with children might fall into the memory keeper and hobbyist segments. Teenagers tend to see themselves as casual photographers or someone who rarely takes photos.

Since the introduction of smartphones, we have seen significant shifts in the mix of photographer types among camera owners. Between 2010 and 2017, there was a dramatic decline in the percentage of camera owners who consider themselves casual photographers. InfoTrends believes that these casual photographers have migrated from using a digital camera to a smartphone. Likewise, people who rarely take photos have likely switched over to smartphones, and perhaps have even retired their digital cameras. In 2013, mobile phones surpassed digital cameras as the camera used most often and the gap continues to widen each year.

InfoTrends’ Interchangeable Lens Camera Study Reveals Consumers’ Naming Preferences

For several years, InfoTrends has used the term “Compact interchangeable lens camera (CILC)” to describe the relatively new class of smaller cameras with a removable lens that compete with Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. Now, according to InfoTrends’ latest U.S. Interchangeable Lens Camera Market Study, it seems that consumers generally prefer the term “Digital interchangeable lens camera (DILC)” to describe these cameras.

Point & Shoot Cameras Appealing to Future Buyers….Even the Younger Ones

It’s hard to not see an article these days – online or print – that talks about how the mobile camera is taking over as the everyday camera, some go as far to say that mobile phones are killing the traditional camera. The iPhone “Shot on iPhone” marketing campaigns are even promoting that their camera phone photos are good enough to turn into huge outdoor billboards, I’ve seen a few along the Boston city highways recently. Quest Toward Mobile Print Simplification Continues

Recently, an acquaintance had a near-meltdown when she couldn’t figure out how to print from her Windows tablet to her Dell printer. On Facebook, she implored friends to help her figure out what she was doing wrong—indicating she needed printouts for work, pronto.

She isn’t alone. Take a look at the user review section of any mobile print app, and you will encounter plenty of comments around printing issues (e.g., app doesn’t work, formatting is incorrect, printer isn’t supported). Indeed, recent InfoTrends research indicated that the top perceived barriers to mobile printing center around technical and compatibility issues.

Assuming you needed to print something from your smartphone or tablet for personal reasons, which would be the largest barriers to doing so?

Is that a smartphone in your pocket?…

There is no doubt that American’s love their mobile phones — and our latest love affair is with the smartphone. According to the 2013 InfoTrends U.S. Mobile Imaging Study, 94% of consumers report using a mobile phone of some kind, and nearly 59% are using a smartphone. It’s hard to miss the slew of TV commercials that promote the latest and greatest smartphones. Some commercials, like the recent iPhone campaign say that more photos are taken and more music is listened to on an iPhone than any other device. Windows Phone has a funny commercial that makes fun of Android & iPhone users as they brawl with each other about which is better while the Windows users calmly stand by and shoot photos/video of the brawling group. All joking aside, which operating system is really winning over the hearts of U.S. consumers?

Everyday Video Going Mobile

In the ‘60s it was your favorite Uncle who had the fancy Super8 video camera. The ‘80s brought us the “luggable” VHS camcorder, the ‘90s saw smaller digital camcorders that could record to compact video tapes, and the 2000s made a move to internal or flash memory. Present day finds the traditional camcorder being displaced by smaller and more convenient mobile phones and digital cameras. Will these pocketable devices replace camcorders?

When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Rugged

Cameras are facing tough competition from ever-present camera phones. It can be difficult for a new point & shoot camera to attract attention in a sea of smartphone and tablet introductions. Fortunately, digital camera vendors can stand out by introducing new models with sought-after features like rugged, go-anywhere construction, and connectivity. In the InfoTrends’ 2011 Digital Camera End-User Study, respondents were presented with current and futuristic camera features and asked to rank the importance of each feature. Connectivity and waterproof capabilities were two of the more interesting features that respondents cited. This week, Olympus and Fujifilm introduced new camera models that address these demands.
