Keypoint Intelligence – InfoTrends (InfoTrends) recently surveyed 24 mid-tier print service providers to learn about the professionals who make up their client care teams, how accounts are assigned to them, the roles they perform, and how much time they spend serving clients today in relation to two years ago. Our results point to a distinct evolution in communication practices and a general agreement about the importance of enterprise client care.

The digital revolution is in full swing with new innovations making headlines daily. On top of this, the print world itself is seeing a smaller upheaval in the form of digital printing as a replacement/supplement of traditional offset.

For those seeking to turn a profit, this pace of change means frequent challenges. The new landscape has altered customer demand, placing more emphasis on shorter runs and high value product applications. Businesses, especially those small to medium-sized, are constantly trying to eliminate the advantages of larger competition. One such benefit that large PSPs enjoy is a wide product portfolio – one that can meet most any customer demand.

Highlights of GMC Software’s European Events

GMC Software (GMC), a Neopost Digital Company, recently hosted two events in Europe. On February 14th, it held its first EMEA analyst summit in Paris, France. The following weekend, it hosted its Service Providers Executive Advisory on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. InfoTrends was invited to participate in both events.

The EMEA analyst summit included discussions around GMC’s latest major product release, R11, the future state of customer communications technology, and GMC’s future strategy. In addition to presentations of Henri Dura, COO at Neopost Enterprise Digital Services (EDS), Scott Draeger, VP Product Marketing at EDS, and several other product managers at GMC, there was ample opportunity for 1:1 networking with the leadership team.

As for the executive advisory board, GMC did a great job of pulling together a group of 13 service providers and 15 representatives from various countries in Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific. Attendees received updates from leadership at GMC on enhancements to the offering, discussed market disruption and service expansion opportunities during the session, as well as shared best practices and provided input on how GMC can continue to evolve its offering to best support their future needs.

Online Chat: A Popular Feature on Chinese Printing Web Sites

The Expanding Scope of Managed Print Services (MPS)

InfoTrends’ MPS service clients are aware of the impending expansion of MPS scope, which is currently focused on the office environment. In our May 2009 document entitled “The New MPS: Scope and Services” (login required), we discussed research data and vendor announcements that clearly indicated managed print in the Office would  grow beyond this scope to include virtual/remote workers, CRD, in-plant production, and even commercial print. As an example:

  • InfoTrends’ Professional and Managed Print Services research indicates that only 11% of MPS prospects would not roll old hardware into new contracts, implying that MPS could quickly cannibalize currently unmanaged devices and environments.
  • At AIIM / On Demand 2009, HP announced that its latest version of Web Jetadmin (device management) added support for large-format DesignJet devices. HP also announced MPS support for remote/virtual users that included a limited number of devices bundled with next-day replacement support and supplies replenishment.
  • Although not formally announced, press releases regarding Xerox wins implied that remote/virtual workers and their devices were indeed managed under enterprise MPS contracts.

Last week, Xerox finally formalized its Enterprise Print Services (EPS) offering. Specifically, the announcement expands on the scope of their MPS offering to include remote/virtual workers and production-class print. Read more »

Why Hasn’t Production Color Digital Print Been More Successful in Japan?

Alex Sumarta and I were in Tokyo recently for the On Demand Japan Conference. One of the questions that we frequently get is “Why hasn’t production color digital print been more successful in Japan?” No one knows the answer for sure, but as we listened to the analysts from our Japanese office talk about the market, some points became clear:

  • Japanese printers pride themselves in providing high levels of quality
  • Print service providers feel that quality and consistency is what differentiates them
  • The poor quality and lack of consistency of some of the earliest digital color print products has given digital a bad reputation that it is only now beginning to shed
