Now that the speculation frenzy has been relieved with Apple’s introduction of the new iPad yesterday, I’ll give my perspective on what it means for the market. The short answer is that if you are a publisher, content producer, advertiser, marketing services provider or Google, it’s all good. If you are a printing company or equipment supplier with no presence in digital media, it’s all bad.

Everyone Knows the iPad is Dominating: Here Are Some Other Facts about Tablets!

Microsoft popularized the concept of a “tablet personal computer” at the beginning of the 21st Century, but nearly a decade would pass before the idea of a consumer tablet became widespread. In early 2010, the mobile market changed forever when Apple introduced its iPad tablet, which weighed less than 2 pounds and featured an intuitive touch screen interface. The iPad met with instant success, and a barrage of competitive products quickly followed suit–at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) back in January, over 80 new tablets from other vendors were announced.

Despite the availability of competing products, it almost goes without saying that Apple’s iPad is dominating the market. According to InfoTrends’ research, about 80% of tablet owners have Apple iPads, while nearly 36% have tablets from other vendors. Amazon Lights the Kindle Fire

The tablet market got a little more crowded this week. What remains to be seen is whether the top 80% or the bottom 20% feels the squeeze, or if maybe the whole pie gets bigger to make room for a new player. Amazon’s entry had been widely anticipated and predicted to be a potential “iPad killer”. The announcement of the Amazon Kindle Fire, a 7-inch Android device with an aggressive $199 price point, made headlines on Wednesday, but measuring it against the iPad may be comparing apples to, um, Apples. Digital vs. Print … Publishing Industry Tipping Point Revisited

Last summer I wrote a blog suggesting the publishing industry may soon reach a tipping point – a point at which the industry accelerates towards a digital business model and away from a print-based model. Recent financial results from Amazon.com, Gannett, The New York Times, and Apple provide further evidence that the industry is closer to that point.

Converting Printing Plants into Data Centers – More Irony in the Publishing Industry

Earlier this month I/O Data Centers opened their latest modular data center facility at the former site of the New York Times printing plant in Edison, NJ. Apparently printing plants and paper mills have many characteristics that are desired for mega-sized data centers being constructed around the world. How ironic.

The New York Times Co. originally opened the state-of-the-art printing plant in 1992, less than one year after Tim Berners-Lee posted a short summary of the World Wide Web project he had been working on at CERN. Noted Berners-Lee in his post, “The WWW project merges the techniques of information retrieval and hypertext to make an easy but powerful global information system.”

Fast forward 16 years and the publisher announced it was shutting down the facility, reducing the size of the paper by one and a half inches and consolidating production operations at its College Point facility in Queens New York. Read more »

Publishing Business … Everything is Possible

I attended the first day of the Publishing Business Conference and Expo held at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. This long running event (years ago known as Book Tech Expo), included a wide range of speakers covering the magazine and book publishing industry, around 40 exhibitors, and some 2,500 attendees according to the event organizer North American Publishing Company (NAPCO).

While many publishers are still trying to get their legs under them after the brutal recession and on-going demise of traditional business models, I found the presentations this year were quite upbeat with common themes including marketing as a service, mobility, iPads, social media, and cross media. The Simple Joy of Reading a Great… Computer

I’ve always been an avid reader, but I don’t always find as much time as I’d like to sit back and read a good book. Last week, I took a relaxing vacation and rediscovered my love of literature.

Years ago, I recall a rather forward-thinking teacher telling my sixth grade class that people would someday do all of their reading on computers.

“I don’t like that idea,” my friend instantly objected. “You can’t curl up with a computer!” Of course, my classmate was quite right at the time–the computers of yesteryear were big, noisy, and barely transportable. Those computers had to be placed on a desk or table, and they also required access to an electrical outlet. Read more »

O’Reilly Tools of Change: Publishing Beyond Boundaries

For the 5th year, O’Reilly hosted its Tools of Change Conference; selling out for the 4th year in a row. Amongst the many publishers was a plethora of information pertaining to eBooks, enhancements, and apps (Oh My!). In addition to keynotes and sessions was a showcase from a variety of vendors and conference sponsors including Ingram, codeMantra, aptara, and MarkLogic.

As in many traditionally print-centric industries, publishing is changing at a speed that was unimaginable even five years ago. After the Apple iPad was released in 2010, a large number of e-reader and tablet devices hit the market trying to grab a piece of this emerging market. Skip Prichard, President of Ingram, said in his keynote that for every 100 paperback books there are 115 Kindles. Read more »
