Changing the Landscape of Décor Print Industry: Toppan’s Acquisition of Interprint

Observers of the global print industry recently got more evidence of the power Japan-based Toppan’s drive to expand its industrial print operations and marketing. On June 24, Toppan Printing Co., Ltd., announced it has acquired 100% of Interprint GmbH (Germany), a global printer of décor materials such as wallpaper and laminates. Dubbing Toppan as just a printing company does not do justice to this giant organization, which has been an innovator in print and related activities for over a century. Today, it is a leading supplier of print, equipment, and services to a wide range of segments, including décor, packaging, and other industrial applications. On June 27th, 2019 Toppan also announced a new president, Mr. Hideharu Maro. As part of the announcment, Toppan stated “Mr. Maro takes over at a time when digital transformation and changing market dynamics are creating new openings and opportunities for the printing industry. Toppan has identified packaging, décor materials, and security solutions as its main growth engines globally and is strengthening the well-established international network of its electronics business.”

InPrint 2015 – demonstrating that print is much more than ink on paper

November 2015 saw the second instalment of InPrint, the industrial print show and conference. A total of 3,400 visitors from 68 countries came to the Munich Trade Fair Centre. Compared to the previous event in Hannover, the numbers of exhibitors, attendees and foot print increased by a third.

InPrint focussed on three fields of application: functional, decorative and packaging printing. Unlike traditional printing shows, InPrint has a different attendee profile: Typical visitors to InPrint are companies such as system integrators, materials developers, and manufacturers interested in providing solutions for the industrial/decorative print market. But even if you do not intend on integrating a custom press, the show is a good opportunity to get informed on where printing technology is being used beyond document printing. Print service providers, who visit InPrint, have been able to expand their horizon while visiting vendor booths as well as attending the conference with its extensive program.

Xerox and EFI – Making the Transformation

Xerox and EFI announced their 4Q 2012 earnings yesterday. Both companies continue to execute on strategies to transform, but are moving in different directions. There are lessons to be learned for the industry.

Xerox – Services for Growth, Technology for Profit

Xerox has made it very clear that they in the midst of a shift to a Services-led strategy. The company is managing its Technology business for profits and cash generation by lowering the cost basis and investing in services areas.

Xerox CEO Ursula Burns opened the earnings call by saying “Xerox is a company going through a seismic transformation.” The financial results show how far Xerox has transformed. The Services segment of the company grew 7% and is now 52% of the business and the Technology segment declined 8% and is now 48% of total revenue. For the first time, Xerox generated more in profits from Services than from Technology.
