Jim Hamilton
 Nov 4, 2011

In this video blog I talk about HP and Kodak print samples that I received this fall after Label Expo and Graph Expo. This is a follow-up to the video blogs I did after Graph Expo 2011.

I hope you enjoy this video. If you have comments or questions, please let me know. If you have innovative samples you’d like me to see, please send them to: Jim Hamilton, InfoTrends, 97 Libbey Industrial Parkway, Suite 300, Weymouth, MA, 02189

memjet comes to wide format

One of the questions I hear frequently is about the potential impact of memjet – the inkjet print head technology – on the wide format digital print market. This question is likely to become even more common following the announcements at Graph Expo and LabelExpo that two companies have become the first to integrate the memjet print head technology into wide format digital print solutions.

At Graph Expo Xante announced that it has become the first to integrate the memjet print head into a wide format printing system which the company is calling the Excelagraphix 4200. OWN-X’s WideStar 2000 is another memjet-powered wide format printer announced last week that will be shown at LabelExpo, so it is pretty clear that memjet is picking up speed, so to speak. Tracking the Digital Market through Graph Expo Booth Space

Jim Hamilton

Since 2004, InfoTrends has analyzed the Graph Expo show floor maps as an indicator of market changes. We’ve ranked the exhibitors by the amount of space they have on the show floor. These rankings are compiled by measuring the published show floor map. Initially InfoTrends began conducting this exercise to show the impact of the digital vendors on a trade show that had been dominated over the years by traditional printing press vendors. This point has long since been made. For all practical purposes, as one looks at the list of top vendors in recent years, Graph Expo has become dominated by digital exhibitors. Heidelberg was the number one exhibitor until 2008, when it did not exhibit, and it probably was the top exhibitor for many shows prior to Graph Expo 2004. For the past two Graph Expo shows however, Xerox has been the company with the most exhibit space.

Company 2011 2004
Xerox 1 3
Canon 2 17
Heidelberg 3 1
EFI 4 12
Agfa 5 15
Ricoh 6 Did not exhibit
HP 7 4
Pitney Bowes 8 Not in top 20
Standard Finishing 9 16
Kodak 10 11

A Video Look at Print Samples from Graph Expo 2011

 Sep 20, 2011

As I have done at previous trade shows, I collected print samples. This time I ended up with a lot of samples. Instead of posting one long video on Graph Expo 2011 samples I’ve broken this up into four segments:

  • High speed inkjet (8 minutes, 45 seconds)
  • Cut-sheet toner (5 minutes, 34 seconds)
  • Labels, packaging, and wide format (4 minutes, 53 seconds)
  • More print and other fun stuff (5 minutes, 1 second)

Fujifilm sharpens wide-format focus with home-grown Acuity

Fujifilm has reached a milestone in its wide-format inkjet strategy this month with the launch of the Acuity LED 1600 machine.

Fujifilm Acuity LED 1600

To date the Acuity brand has only been applied by Fujifilm to the category-defining mid-range flatbed UV printers (which are also sold by Océ as the Arizona).  The Acuity LED 1600 is a new from the ground up device, based entirely on Fujifilm technology.  It uses a different architecture to the rest of the Acuity range in that it is a roll-to-roll device to which tables are attached for handling rigid boards rather than a flatbed device that you add a feed and take up roll to print reels.
