Print China 2019 – Second Biggest Print Trade Show

Ralf Schlozer
 May 2, 2019

Print China, Asia’s largest printing industry exhibition, has been held every 4 years since 2007. The 4th iteration of the show took place from April 9th to 13th at the Guangdong Modern International Exhibition Center. The trade show alternates with China Print in Beijing, which is also held every four years and caters to the general printing industry as well. Since the Chinese market is so vast, both shows have a unique regional appeal—Print China focuses on Southern China while China Print caters to the Northern China printing industry. Both shows have the same organizers and are sponsored by the Printing and Printing Equipment Industries Association of China (PEIAC). Both shows are large enough to attract local as well as international visitors, primarily from the Asia Pacific region – the organizers claim visitors from more than 100 countries. Language can sometimes still be a barrier, and not all vendors are well-prepared for a discussion in English.

A final post-show statement for 2019 is not yet available, however Print China 2015 already set an historical record with a total trade volume of nearly 6 billion RMB (about US $1 billion, intended transactions included). This represented an increase of about 20% in relation to Print China 2011. In addition, Print China 2015 surpassed the 8th Beijing International Printing Technology Exhibition (China Print 2013) to become the largest exhibition in Asia and the second-largest in the world (Drupa in Germany captured the first place spot). About 206,000 visitors attended Print China in 2015, up 20% over 2011. The preliminary count for 2019 amounted to just over 200,000 visitors—in line with what was seen four years ago. The 2019 event attracted 1,200 exhibitors from 28 countries. Print China covered several halls of the Dongguan Exhibition Centre, with many halls having two floors. While the ground level floors were packed with exhibitors and visitors, the upper level was decidedly less busy. Print China 2019 accommodated 140,00 sq. meters of space, only slightly smaller than Drupa 2016 (158,237 sq. meters).

 Jun 19, 2013

These two videos cover print samples I collected at China Print 2013 (May 14-18, Beijing).

The first one includes examples from Scodix and Founder which show the use of metallic effects achieved through digital print and special substrates or laminates.

The second one includes a range of digital print samples including one from a Chinese vendor showing a technology demonstration of a UV inkjet cut-sheet printer.

You can find more print sample videos on the Jim Hamilton YouTube channel.

One of the big news stories from China Print 2013 is a technology demonstration by MasterWork and Taichuan of a sheet fed UV inkjet-based digital color printer with a print width of 420 millimeters. This is the first color inkjet model of its type from a Chinese vendor.

Efi Arazi, Graphic Communications luminary – Passed at 76

 Apr 15, 2013

Efi Arazi, print industry pioneer, luminary, and philanthropist who set the digital revolution in motion in the Graphic Communications filed died this past weekend at the age of 76.

Efi Arazi 1937-2013

Efi was born in Jerusalem in 1937 and already at the young age of just over 16 won a reward for technology innovation in Israel. He earned an engineering degree in the 1960s at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; while there he helped develop the TV camera that was used in the Apollo 11 mission. At the age of 23 he became a fellow at Harvard University.

Efi returned to Israel in 1967 and the following year he founded and headed Scitex Corporation an Israel-based multi-national company that specialized in developing and manufacturing hardware and software for the graphics design, printing, and publishing markets.  Efi stepped down as CEO and president of Scitex on June 1, 1988, but continued to serve as chairman of the board of directors of the company until 1989. Inkjet Announcements Highlight China Print 2009

Jim Hamilton
 May 21, 2009

The high-speed inkjet market is expanding rapidly. One recent indication of this is the number of inkjet-related product developments that turned up at China Print 2009 (May 12th to 16th in Beijing). Held every four years, China Print’s organizers expected to have about 1,000 exhibitors and more than 200,000 visitors. It is the largest show in the region and some people believe that the next China Print (in 2013) will be larger than drupa 2012. China Print 2009 was split out over eight sizeable halls, most of which were focused on traditional printing and finishing technologies. There was, nonetheless, significant production digital print activity including many inkjet products for wide format, high-speed document, and packaging applications. The bulk of the inkjet activity was centered in Hall E2, which was also where much of the toner-based digital print technology was located.

The first indication that inkjet would be a big theme of the show was Kodak’s announcement that it would show its monochrome Stream technology there. Stream is capable of speeds of 1,000 feet-per-minute (305 meters-per-minute) at a resolution of 600 dots per inch. It supports a print width of 10.56 cm and uses pigment-based inks. The samples shown at China Print were comparable to the ones handed out at Graph Expo and show strong monochrome quality at very high speed. China Print was the official launch for the monochrome Stream product. Kodak reported that the color launch is also on schedule. Expect to see new branding for Stream in the coming weeks. Not only was the monochrome Stream technology up and running at the booth, Kodak also showed a Versamark VL2000.
