It’s hard to not see an article these days – online or print – that talks about how the mobile camera is taking over as the everyday camera, some go as far to say that mobile phones are killing the traditional camera. The iPhone “Shot on iPhone” marketing campaigns are even promoting that their camera phone photos are good enough to turn into huge outdoor billboards, I’ve seen a few along the Boston city highways recently. Best Buy Gets Back Into the Camera Game

During the golden days of digital camera sales, Best Buy was a dominant retailer. It offered consumers a wide selection of compact cameras at good prices. However, with compact camera sales waning, Best Buy has seen its influence on the market diminish, as consumers and vendors focus on more profitable digital interchangeable lens camera sales (DILCs). While Best Buy has sold DILCs, the selection was limited, merchandising was lacking, lens selection was limited and locked away behind glass, and in-store personnel were not trained to answer probing technical questions.

I find much of what I read from reviewers to be very valuable and in some cases, insightful. When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going

With the digital camera market struggling this year, it could be very easy for camera vendors to pull back their marketing and sales efforts and try to weather out the storm by controlling their costs. However, this would be the worst thing that they could do. “Out of sight, out of mind,” as the saying goes. A better approach to the situation should be, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

Canon and Samsung are showing that they are not going to roll over and let the market dictate to them what the outcome for the year will be. InfoTrends estimates that, on average, there will be over one million cameras sold a month this year. Although this number has been much higher in recent history, it is still an impressive quantity of product being sold. Some company is going to sell these cameras and it appears that Canon and Samsung are saying, “Why not us?”

Nikon Df DSLR

Feeling a little nostalgic today? I know I am and it’s thanks to the introduction of the Nikon Df a new DSLR with all the modern bells and whistles but with the retro look of a film SLR. It not only looks like a film SLR but if you listen closely, it evens sounds like one. Until I heard the unmistakable shutter click again I hadn’t realized how much I loved and missed that sound.

Nikon D7100 Fills the Bill

Back in February of this year, I blogged about my mission to replace the Nikon D200 DSLR I’ve been shooting with for the past several years. That search would have been easy if Nikon had replaced the D300s SLR (introduced well over five years ago) with a new D400 model, but they haven’t and there don’t seem to be any indications that they will, so I’ve spent this year testing the FX-format full-frame D800 (see the D800 blog), and D600 cameras, and most recently the D7100 DX-format model.
