On April 10, 2020, Xeikon announced the launch of its Café TV tool to respect the need for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. HP Unveils Extensive Updates and Introductions for drupa 2020

In anticipation of the drupa event that is scheduled to take place in Dusseldorf, Germany this June, HP kicked off its media event with a raft of announcements. These announcements include new additions to HP’s portfolio of commercial digital printing and labels & packaging solutions. With this newest range of updates, HP is clearly focusing on increasing overall productivity with significant improvements to the entire ecosystem, including inks and chemistry, substrates, workflow, finishing, and industry partnerships. These improvements will enable printers to meet current and future customer demands while also bringing value to their customers’ supply chains.

In what was perhaps the most significant announcement because it reveals HP Indigo’s future direction, the company introduced a new platform 6 V12 Digital Press with LEP Architecture. The HP Indigo V12 marks the first time that the firm has launched a new platform series that is not based on its common impression cylinder technology. Instead, this new technology is based on inline imaging systems using a transfer belt for intermediate image transfer. This 340 mm wide printer is targeted toward label applications and designed for mid- to high-volume converters. The new linear architecture for imaging unlocks faster print speeds of up to 120 meters per minute (400 ft/min).

The Rise of Digital B2

Personally, I always believed in the potential of B2 digital since it become mainstream at drupa 2012 with several vendors showing or previewing products. Of course, new product concepts often take longer in hitting the market than expected, accordingly it took some time for real placements to arrive at customer sites. In our research we already identified a number of benefits these presses bring, and therefore it was no surprise to see installations rise quickly for several years.

For 2018 we feared to see some slowdown, as the printers with investment interest should have already made their calculation by then whether there is a business case for a B2 digital press or not. But it seems there is quite a bit of continuing interest for the devices, and 2018 placements held up reasonably well, despite drupa 2020 looming large. There are ongoing improvements on the existing devices, but there will be a lot more choice in models at drupa 2020, including next generation improvements on existing ones. But it seems that even in the meantime companies interested in B2 still find new opportunities, business cases, or are still only beginning to explore the capabilities of existing devices.

Print On Demand Forecast shows high growth in Colour Inkjet

Keypoint Intelligence – InfoTrends just launched their latest digital printing forecast for the POD market. For years we have been tracking and forecasting digital production printing markets, including placements, installed base, print volumes, equipment, service and supplies revenues. The data can be broken down by multiple device classes and features to allow for further insights. Our latest POD forecast has 2018 as base year and looks at developments until 2023.

It is always interesting to see how types of devices with a small number of placements can have a big effect on other metrics, such as print volumes. Continuous feed (CF) colour inkjet started to gain traction in 2008, and while sales crept up, the total number is barely reaching 291 units in the US and about 160 in Western Europe. This even includes counting these devices by engine, which means the number of installed print lines is about half. It pales against 12,000 (WE) to 16,000 (US) toner-based devices installed in 2018, even when excluding entry level devices.

Looking at print volumes we see how the small group of CF inkjet colour devices already has a big impact on colour volumes. By 2018 inkjet print volumes overtook colour toner volumes, mostly due to the impact of CF inkjet devices, which contribute about 95% to the colour inkjet print volume.

POD Digital Colour Print Volume Forecast

CF colour inkjet will be a major driver not only in the future growth of inkjet impressions, but for colour impressions in general. Although we expect the colour toner volumes to increase by 10 to 15% by 2023, the colour inkjet volumes are expected to grow by around 80% between 2018 and 2023. This is leading to an average annual growth in the range of 8 to 9% for all colour digital impressions. Not only because of the recent success in CF inkjet sales will the US remain the larger market, the US market has a larger potential in replacing black & white volumes as well. Converting digital black & white volumes into colour has been a big driver in the past, but offset conversion and application growth will drive this colour growth more and more.

The dominance of CF colour inkjet will wane somewhat in the future as more cut-sheet inkjet devices are launched and prove to be very productive. We expect drupa 2020 to be a major launch pad. Still, even by 2023 the vast majority of inkjet print volumes will be contributed by the continuous feed devices.

Landa’s S10P Analyst and Press Launch at Mercury Print Productions

On June 27, 2019, Landa introduced its first installation of an S10P Nanographic Printing Press with a perfector to a group of analyst and media professionals at Mercury Print Productions (Rochester, NY). The media event included presentations from Nachum Korman (Vice President and General Manager of Landa Americas) and John Place (CEO of Mercury), a product demonstration, a tour of the factory, and a Q&A session. The S10P offers two-sided B1 printing, and is suited to general commercial printing, publishing, and related applications.

Nachum Korman kicked off the analyst briefing by stating that the S10, which is engineered for packaging and converting, has officially launched after first being unveiled at Drupa 2016. Korman provided details on the first four installations of the Landa Nanographic presses —one in Israel, two in Europe, and one in the United States. The installation at Mercury in Rochester marks the first North American installation of an S10P that focuses on commercial printing. He also talked about several additional S10s, S10Ps, and W10 installations that will be coming in the near future, including an S10P in China, an S10 in Mexico, and a W10 in Germany

Korman also discussed one of Landa’s greatest differentiators—Nanography Technology. He elaborated, “The Landa presses use fewer pigments than offset to create inks while producing a comparable image quality at half the thickness and amount of ink on the paper (0.5 microns vs. 1 micron for offset). The Landa Nanographic printing process does not require substrates to be pretreated or primed, and any type of offset media (coated or uncoated) can be fed through the press at rated speed. What is especially interesting is how Landa deals with the constant challenge of drying the printed image on the paper. Landa’s technology does this by building the image into a heated blanket that evaporates most of the water, leaving the image ready to be transferred to the paper. Additional hot air drying systems are applied.

Keypoint Intelligence Forecast Continued Growth in Business Inkjet & A4 Color Laser Shipments through 2023 in North America and Western Europe

While the overall office equipment markets in NA and WE are mature, Keypoint Intelligence/InfoTrends expect continued growth in A4 Color Laser and Business Inkjet Segment 3 & 4 according to recently published SF Printer and MFP Hardware Forecasts for both regions. In addition, the shift from SF printers to multifunctional devices will continue. According to the forecast, in North America, SF Laser printers represented 45% of total shipments in 2018 and are expected to decline to 40% of devices compared with MF shipments which will grow from 55% to 60% by 2023.  While in Western Europe MF shipments will grow from 56% to 58% of total shipments during the same period.

In addition, total NA office color laser shipments are also expected to outperform monochrome devices during the same period growing from 35% of total shipments to 40% by 2023. While in Western Europe, office color laser is expected to grow from 40% of total shipments to 41% during the same period. While the overall market for both regions will remain relatively flat to a slight decline the shift from SF to MF devices and from monochrome to color will continue to impact the overall office equipment market. The biggest opportunity for growth is within the office color laser A4 segments (3-4) for both regions.  In North America A4 Color MF devices are forecasted to grow at a 6.8% CAGR through 2023.

Business Inkjet Segments Continue to Grow

In addition to the growth in A4 color laser MFPs, Keypoint Intelligence/InfoTrends forecast shows growth in Business Inkjet Segments 3 and 4 through the same period. Business Inkjet Segment 3 is expected to grow at 6% CAGR in North America and 2.3% CAGR in Western Europe.  The majority of unit growth will be in A4 MFPs in this business inkjet segment with new models that offer longer life consumables and feature-rich product offerings. This new breed of inkjet devices offers an attractive alternative to laser particularly within the SMB office environment with standard wireless connectivity, high yield consumables and in some cases, comparable cost per page to laser. Furthermore, Inkjet Segment 4 is expected to grow at 9.7 CAGR in North America and 6.2% CAGR by 2023 in Western Europe during the same period, driven by a wider acceptance of page-wide ink technology and new robust high-speed color inkjet devices entering this market segment.

Xerox Announces Launch of Baltoro HF Inkjet Press

On Wednesday, June 26, 2019, Xerox announced the launch of its new Baltoro HF Inkjet Press. This fully Xerox engineered cut-sheet production press uses what is basically an iGen platform, and it enables clients to print high-volume transactional work and direct mail/catalogs on a single press. A new High Fusion (13.76 inches) print engine with Xerox W-Series inkjet heads provides true high definition 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution. This enables the creation of a range of applications on a variety of offset coated media types like matte, silk, and satin with High Fusion ink.

The Baltoro HF features Xerox High Fusion ink that is similar to what is used in the Trivor HF Press, so there is no need for paper priming or pretreating. Elimination of the priming solution reduces press size, power consumption, and total cost of ownership. The device offers a 4.5 picoliter drop size and infrared drying systems. It is capable of producing 300 ipm in duplex mode, accommodates a maximum sheet size of 14.33” x 20.5” (364 mm x 520 mm), and outputs up to 18,000 images per hour. It also has a unique option to cap cyan, magenta, and yellow heads when printing in black & white. Powered by Automated Intelligence to optimize and maintain color and image quality and also self-correct in real time, production on the Baltoro HF press is simplified with the FreeFlow Print Server’s Cost Quality Optimization (CQO) tools.

Xerox will begin taking orders for its new Baltoro HF press today. Because the Baltoro device is capable of handling everything that the Xerox Brenva machine can produce and more, the company will stop taking orders for Brenva devices effective immediately. Of course, Xerox will continue to provide service and supplies for Brenva devices.

Hunkeler innovationdays 2019 – a hardware view

The Hunkeler innovationdays started out as a humble open house event of a Swiss finishing manufacturing company. Indicating a forward-thinking company, the innovationdays morphed over the years into the most important global event for continuous feed production document printing – as finishing equipment is naturally best demonstrated in conjunction with a printing system. Visitors love the idea of seeing printing lines from all major vendors sitting side-by-side and feeding the finishing lines for converted products. The 2019 iteration improved again on the number of exhibitors and visitors with about 100 exhibitors and 6,500 visitors expected for the show.

The theme of this year’s event was “success with automation”. There is no doubt that automation is getting increasingly important as a means to reduce labour cost, counter the shortage of skilled staff, avoid production mistakes, and speed up the device setup. This is especially critical the shorter the runs become. Hunkeler presented some fine examples of automation, notably a prototype of a sheeter and stacker that is able to automatically change formats from within seconds. Other new launches with focus on automation included a non-stop roll splicer for continuous feed printers, folders, perforators and web inspection modules.

What’s Next for Production Print DFEs?

A Trip Way Back in Time

On demand production print digital front ends (DFEs) began their competitive march in the late 1990s when Scitex Corporation announced its entry into the print on demand (POD) space by launching the Spontane printing system. The solution was an OEM version of the Fuji Xerox Docucolor 40. During that same timeframe, Scitex also developed a DFE version of its Brisque Prepress system and adapted it for the on-demand market. This announcement started a high-end competitive DFE battle between EFI, Scitex, and to some extent ColorBus.

Almost 50% of General Office Workers in the U.S. said their Required Color Printing is Increasing.

According to recent Keypoint Intelligence/InfoTrends primary research, roughly 50% of 18 to 29-year-olds in general office environments said their required office color printing is increasing compared to 33% for all respondents.   Furthermore, our study found almost 59% of all office workers indicate no change or decrease in their required color printing of work-related documents. Our survey found that companies with less than 100 employees showed a greater increase in their required color printing overall.

For all your required work-related printing is the use of color increasing, decreasing or remaining the same?

In addition, 40% of general office workers said that their optional work-related color printing is increasing. Again, this was highest among 18 to 29-year-olds in our survey results, with 55% stating their optional color printing was increasing. Furthermore, compared with our 2016 survey results, in the U.S., color printing of optional documents is growing.

Growth in color output can be directly attributed to the growth of color devices in the market. In fact, in 2017, color EP office devices grew 2.7% year over year. As the price of color printers and MFPs continue to decline more and more people have access to these devices in the office.    In fact, general office users in our survey, said the reasons they have increased their color printing was that it adds more value to the document, makes it easier to read and that color prints are more influential overall.
