Print China 2019 – Second Biggest Print Trade Show

Print China, Asia’s largest printing industry exhibition, has been held every 4 years since 2007. The 4th iteration of the show took place from April 9th to 13th at the Guangdong Modern International Exhibition Center. The trade show alternates with China Print in Beijing, which is also held every four years and caters to the general printing industry as well. Since the Chinese market is so vast, both shows have a unique regional appeal—Print China focuses on Southern China while China Print caters to the Northern China printing industry. Both shows have the same organizers and are sponsored by the Printing and Printing Equipment Industries Association of China (PEIAC). Both shows are large enough to attract local as well as international visitors, primarily from the Asia Pacific region – the organizers claim visitors from more than 100 countries. Language can sometimes still be a barrier, and not all vendors are well-prepared for a discussion in English.

A final post-show statement for 2019 is not yet available, however Print China 2015 already set an historical record with a total trade volume of nearly 6 billion RMB (about US $1 billion, intended transactions included). This represented an increase of about 20% in relation to Print China 2011. In addition, Print China 2015 surpassed the 8th Beijing International Printing Technology Exhibition (China Print 2013) to become the largest exhibition in Asia and the second-largest in the world (Drupa in Germany captured the first place spot). About 206,000 visitors attended Print China in 2015, up 20% over 2011. The preliminary count for 2019 amounted to just over 200,000 visitors—in line with what was seen four years ago. The 2019 event attracted 1,200 exhibitors from 28 countries. Print China covered several halls of the Dongguan Exhibition Centre, with many halls having two floors. While the ground level floors were packed with exhibitors and visitors, the upper level was decidedly less busy. Print China 2019 accommodated 140,00 sq. meters of space, only slightly smaller than Drupa 2016 (158,237 sq. meters).

Epson Re-ignites OEM Market with Precision Core Printheads

At the end of March, the Seiko Epson Corporation (Epson) announced that it plans to return to the OEM market with a new lineup of PrecisionCore printheads. According to the company, the move was made to help expand digital printing capabilities in commercial and industrial environments.

China’s Suzhou Ruifa Looks to Disrupt the Printhead Manufacturing Segment

For decades, precise deposition of materials was achieved by utilizing a range of technologies that  produce range of products from graphics arts, decorative, functional, and a host of other applications. Today, several key inkjet technologies drive markets and applications. These are enabled in part by a new generation of micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) deposition / jetting devices, whether continuous inkjet (CIJ), piezoelectric drop on demand, or thermal inkjet drop on demand (TIJ). These technologies have been – for most part – the domain of a handful of companies that had the intellectual property and made the investment in silicone-based printhead manufacturing for several quite some time.

While the main suppliers of existing inkjet heads are almost all clustered in Japan, Western Europe, and the USA, a new competitor is now launching in China. After a significant investment in technology and resources, China’s Suzhou Ruifa Printing Technology Co. has announced its entrance as a supplier of thermal inkjet printheads. The company’s new printhead, SUREJet T7680, is a 41mm/1.6” wide thermal head, with 7680 nozzles. According to Suzhou Ruifa, SUREJet T7680 has two meter per second print speed and is capable of 1800×1200 DPI print resolution.

Digitally-printed Fabrics Abound at TexWorld USA 2015

As I roamed the aisles at TexWorld USA in New York City last week I was impressed by the high level of awareness of digital print. On top of that, of the two dozen or so booths that I stopped at, about a third were actively using digital printing technologies. Held bi-annually, TexWorld USA is where fabric and garment manufacturers and local buyers meet to exchange ideas and place orders for the coming fashion season. Exhibitors from Asia, the Middle East, North America and many other regions showed textiles for use in clothing for women, men, juniors and infants. About 300 exhibitors from 17 countries were on hand at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City from January 19th to the 21st.

Xaar making a Comeback in China Wide Format

Rapper L.L. Cool J has a lyric that goes “don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years” and that is kind of what Xaar would probably say about its new print head launch:  that Xaar is a major supplier to the wide format digital graphics market and China is an important part of that. However, Xaar led the emergence of the large wide format graphics business in China in its early days, but as the segment became increasingly commoditized many Chinese wide format printer manufacturers expanded their wide format equipment portfolios.

Rising Labour Cost Spurs Interest in Chinese Workflow Market

By any standard, the Chinese workflow market is years behind the Western industry. Adoption of Computer-to-Plate (CtP) has just started in China, and there is strong reliance on manual labour and processes.

However, unlike Western markets that took twenty years to migrate from CtP to digital, the transition in China might go much quicker as labour wages are spiralling. Whereas western markets experienced relatively stable labour cost when they transitioned from analogue to digital, it is estimated that print-industry related labour cost will rise with about 20% annually. Especially in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guanzhou (the so-called Tier 1 cities) it is difficult for print service providers to attract and retain (unskilled) staff due to high demand for workers. This year, it’s estimated that Chinese labour rates have overtaken those in Mexico.

A Visit to Canon’s imageRUNNER Advance Manufacturing Plant

As part of the industry analyst trip I wrote about previously, Canon brought us to a manufacturing plant in Suzhou, China (in Jiangsu province near Shanghai). The site produces all of the imageRUNNER Advance units sold worldwide as well as the feeding and finishing devices associated with the series. Founded in September of 2001, this site produced its first imageRUNNER in 2002. It now has around 8,600 employees, of which 6,000 or so work on its massive production floor. The site is jointly controlled by Canon, Inc. (66.5%), Canon Finetech, Inc. (23.5%), and Canon (China) Co. Ltd. (10%). It cost approximately $67 million to build and in 2011 accounted for $1.44 billion in sales (this figure represents an internal transfer).

Why Suzhou? Canon chose to build its plant in Suzhou for two reasons: (1) easy access to component manufacturers and (2) the region’s large base of technology-savvy workers. Canon’s goal was to create an environmentally-friendly and technologically-advanced plant capable of top-level quality production using a quality control philosophy based in part on upstream parts management.
