This year at the annual LegalTech show held Feb. 3-5 at the New York City Hilton Midtown, over 100 exhibitors shared the tradeshow floor to demonstrate and display their robust technology geared to help law firms and legal professionals optimize their businesses and workflows. One of the most exciting announcements of the show was Ricoh’s newest offering that they are temporarily calling “Legal MFP”, a platform that can be used on select Ricoh MFP devices to improve end-user workflow while enhancing operational efficiencies, and lowering costs.

Ricoh has done extensive research to understand what it is that legal firms are struggling with and where they can step in to help. Law firms are stressed with trying to run their businesses with pressure to be more aggressive with their processes and litigation support. Ricoh has found that they are seeking improvement in two areas within document output: lowered spend on cost recovery systems and centralization of third-party systems. With this platform, legal professionals can reduce unneeded steps involved in the scanning process, scan to legal Document Management Systems including iManage, Worldox, and OpenText, and automatically sort documents by court-specified file size limits and convert them to appropriate file formats.

InfoTrends believes Ricoh is taking a strong approach with their Legal MFP offering. It is evident they are focused not just on the document workflow side, but on managed services as well, which will enhance their customer relationships and success in this market. Ricoh is serious about Legal, with several dedicated teams on board that focus on developing and pushing their legal specific solutions and services. Ricoh differentiates themselves in this market by listening to their advisory board, and having their driving factor be customer requirements. We believe it is this strategy that will prove successful, and we look forward to seeing what else Ricoh brings to market as the year unfolds. Availability for Ricoh’s “Legal MFP” is expected by May 2015.
