In August, a variety of printer manufacturers announced their latest quarterly earnings. The table below includes percent changes in revenue and operating profit from last year (for the respective print business units), as well as key drivers for the shifts.

Latest vendor quarterly earnings

Toshiba also released its quarterly earnings, but the only information provided about the printing business was: “…higher sales and operating income in the retail information system and office equipment business.” Samsung’s earnings report did not mention its print business, though it is worth noting that shipments of tablets and smartphones were down year over year.

InfoTrends’ opinion

Overall, document imaging companies performed well in the previous quarter. Nearly all vendors grew their imaging and printing revenue compared to last year, while many vendors saw their imaging and printing operating profit increase at a double-digit rate. While the positive effect of currency exchange was a key growth driver, companies also noted benefits from higher-end models, IT services, product launches, sales expansion activities, and cost reduction. It appears that vendor strategies are paying off in the short-term, though time will tell how companies are weathering industry challenges in the longer term. InfoTrends will continue to publish its annual vendor financial analysis in March showing how vendors perform over time.
