Kodak to Announce NexPress SX Platform with Larger Format Size at Graph Expo

Not much more than a year after announcing its NexPress SE platform, Kodak revealed to a group of journalists and analysts today that it was bringing the next NexPress product generation to market. Most notable in the new SX platform is its optional ability to handle a sheet up to 26 inches long with a long-sheet feeder or the Lasermax Roll Systems roll-fed unit. Kodak will show the NexPress SX at Graph Expo (October 3-6 in Chicago). It will become available in the second quarter of 2011. Existing SE customers will be able to upgrade to SX at that time.

Key implications of the larger format size are that it allows applications like a six-page A4/letter format brochure, sizeable book dust jackets, and posters that fit within the 14 inch by 26 inch format. (Note: The maximum format size of the current SE platform is 14 inches by 20.5 inches.)

Other capabilities of the platform include:

  • Smaller toner particle size
  • New halftone screening methods (up to 180 lines per inch)
  • A new version of Kodak’s Intelligent Calibration System (ICS)
  • A matte printing option that better emulates offset printing through a special fuser roller
  • Increased productivity from 120 to 131 images per minute with the long-sheet option

Kodak has also expanded its group of fifth station capabilities to include a light black that improves tonal reproduction. In addition to the new light black the fifth station now handles dimensional, clear, red fluorescent, MICR, red, blue, and green.

A key piece of the SX announcement is the addition of a NexPress photo solution that leverages the improved quality and builds on the fifth station to implement a photo effect that simulates “E-Surface” photo paper. Kodak will show the NexPress SX photo solution next week at Photokina in Cologne, Germany.

Kodak also had some additional news on its plans for Prosper at Graph Expo:

  • A process color Prosper S10 will be on display in the Adphos/GSS booth (#2236-2536)
  • Kodak will have samples on hand for the Prosper 5000XL, Prosper 1000, and Prosper S10/S5 Imprinting systems.
  • Graph Expo will mark the first time in the United States that Kodak has shown its 700 Print Manager driving a Prosper system
