Keeping Up with MGI

I’ve been following MGI since the 1990s when I first ran across the company at the On Demand show. I’ve always been impressed by their development capabilities, which have allowed them to integrate a wide range of features into their devices. Whether it’s the ability to print on multiple substrates; larger formats for digital printing or finishing; or their recent expansion into inkjet products for printing and coating, the company’s products have an impressive feature set. In addition, MGI’s expanded distribution network is bringing products like its Meteor family, EnvelopExpress, DF360, PressCard Pro, PunchCard Pro, JETcard, JETvarnish, and UVarnish to a much wider audience.

In June MGI announced the 71-ppm Meteor DP8700 XL production color printer. The news is significant not only because it extends the Meteor product line to new levels of productivity and format, but also because it puts the industry on notice that MGI is expanding its product line and distribution capabilities in a way that puts them into direct competition with much larger companies, such as Canon, HP, Kodak, Konica Minolta, Ricoh, and Xerox. MGI’s value proposition combines printing, finishing, and value-added features in ways that no other vendor is currently doing. With the expansion of its dealer/distributor model, MGI’s distribution, support, and training capabilities have expanded across a range of geographies—and they are not finished. MGI’s recent announcements of JETcard and JETvarnish, as well as the JET 7540, show how the company is developing expertise in inkjet technologies, which build on MGI strengths in feeding, imaging, and finishing technologies suitable for many weights and types of paper and plastic substrates. Since the mid-1990s, MGI’s historic progression has been impressive, and there is little doubt that the company will extend this innovation in the coming years. With Graph Expo coming up and drupa 2012 not far away, you can expect big things from this French company that is is building an impressive product portfolio.

I’ve just completed a white paper on the Meteor DP8700 XL and it’s available now as a free download. Not only does this white paper provide insight on the DP8700 XL, it also provides additional background on MGI, its history, and current products. Have a look. I think you’ll find it an interesting take on an up-and-coming company.
