Memjet Announces Third Generation Inkjet Technology: ‘DuraFlex’

Bob Leahey
Sep 12, 2019

Inkjet technology supplier Memjet recently announced a new category of inkjet heads, inks and supporting print modules called ‘DuraFlex.’ The news marks a major addition to the offerings of the San Diego company, which now supplies thermal inkjet heads and dye-based inks to about 40 makers of systems that print labels, mail, office documents, corrugated, and other applications. DuraFlex will differ from the longstanding ‘VersaPass’ technology inside most current Memjet-based printers because of two main features: the heads are long-lasting and the inks are pigmented, yielding durable print; DuraFlex shares these two features and the “Dura” prefix of Memjet DuraLink, the head technology announced last year for use in industrial print applications. DuraFlex thus is a third generation of Memjet technology, one that will occupy a space between VersaPass (mostly for benchtops, starting in 2010) and DuraLink (industrial printers, just now commercially available), and it will be marketed to OEMs accordingly.

Today Heidelberg announced its acquisition of Crispy Mountain, a small company not known far outside its base in Mainz, Germany. For those in the U.S. who are unfamiliar with the company, they do not make mountains of light and fluffy doughnuts. Instead, Crispy Mountain develops a light print MIS solution, called Keyline MIS, that is cloud-delivered and mainly sold in Germany with a reseller agreement also in the United Kingdom.

W2P and Print MIS Lines are Blurring + Introducing Print Reach

Ryan McAbee
May 1, 2019

The line that clearly separated a web-to-print (W2P) solution for print e-commerce from a print MIS solution to manage those and other orders through production continues to blur. Think of the first iteration as a divided highway with a solid do-not-pass line in the center where information from online orders traveled on one side and needed to be re-entered to travel in the print MIS lane. The second phase allowed for a passing lane where the systems had a base level of integration to send order information and status back and forth. Today, we are increasingly seeing solutions that combine the two functions into one product or have enhanced integrations to act as one solution. In other words, W2P and print MIS are now traveling together on the same super highway.

Prior to this event, analysts and journalists got a sneak peek at HP’s European Innovation Day where the company’s future strategy and innovation were discussed.

The two devices that were officially launched at the show, were the S300 and S500, are 1.6m (64 inch) machines targeting the polyester-based sportswear, fast fashion, and soft signage market. Furthermore, the company will also launch a third product in the family the HP Stitch S1000, at the upcoming FESPA in Germany in May. The HP Stitch S1000 is a 3.2m (126 inch) device and will be targeting soft signage as well as the contract home décor market that uses a high proportion of polyester based fabrics.
