2018 Financial Review: A Look at 16 Industry Players

Each year, Keypoint Intelligence publishes a document looking at the financial health of manufacturers in the global office equipment industry. The 2019 version is now available through our office services; it covers the performance of 16 industry players in the 2018 fiscal year. In most cases, we show the vendors’ imaging and printing revenue over a five-year span and explain the reasons for any changes. We also review operating profits within imaging and printing divisions to provide another measure of financial health. In the cases where OEMs do not report their imaging and printing performance publicly, we substitute revenue and profit information with data from our single-function printer and MFP placement and market share estimates.

Here are a few high-level findings from our latest financial review:

  • On the whole, global imaging and print-related revenue increased nearly 2% from 2017-2018 – fueled by vendors like HP that saw growth
  • Over a five-year period (2014-2018), overall global imaging/print revenue declined 7% – driven by declining demand and competitive pricing pressures (see chart below)
  • Vendors continued to experience a wide range of profit margins in 2018 (i.e., 0.6% to 16%)

Making Printers & MFPs More Accessible to All Users

Document imaging OEMs have taken many steps to make their products more accessible to people with special needs. While this may be the right thing to do, it can also make business sense—particularly when selling into government agencies, other vertical markets (e.g., education, healthcare), and environments that put an emphasis on accessibility. Furthermore, in many instances designing for accessibility provides the added benefit of delivering a better experience for all users—regardless of their physical and mental capabilities.

In a recently published Market & Vendor Insights report, Market & Vendor Insights: Accessibility, Keypoint Intelligence analysts outlined specific efforts OEMs have undertaken to support accessibility, as well as scored these manufacturers on relevant product features, processes, and initiatives. Categories evaluated are shown in the below scoring table, which for the purposes of this blog post omits the names of manufacturers (they are included in the actual report). The darker blue the cell, the better the OEM performed in our assessment.

New Research Document Scores OEMs on MFP Platforms, Apps, Cloud Readiness

Recently, Keypoint Intelligence analysts published a new Market & Vendor Insight report: MFP Platforms, App Ecosystems, & Cloud Readiness. In this document, we identified the trends surrounding multifunction printer software platforms as well as their associated app ecosystems and cloud readiness features, laid out the competitive landscape in this area, and showed how major OEMs performed in our latest platform and apps ecosystem evaluation (for which cloud readiness is a new scoring rubric).

As a basis for this evaluation, we surveyed the leading document imaging equipment makers in the United States and Europe, and conducted independent research to determine the progress path of MFP software platforms and their associated app ecosystems. HP Indigo recently made public six new US installations of the HP Indigo 8000: Innovative Labeling Solutions (ILS), Dion Label Printing, Nosco, Info Label, Quality Tape and Label, as well as Natural State Label. HP and Xerox – Interesting Bedfellows and Implications to Traditional Relationships

What I love about this industry is that it never gets boring. This week, HP Inc. and Xerox Corporation have announced an expansion of the companies’ existing business relationship. Xerox will now source from HP certain A4 and entry-level A3 products with the majority running on Xerox’s ConnectKey controller software platform, in addition Xerox will supply toner to HP for these and other products. The sourced printers will be based primarily on the laser printing technology HP acquired from Samsung in 2017. Furthermore, the companies have agreed to partner in the Device as a Service (DaaS) market. Xerox will become a DaaS specialist in HP’s Partner First program in the U.S. Xerox’s service capabilities and customer reach in the small to midsize business market, combined with HP’s award-winning DaaS PC offerings, will allow both companies to meet a wider range of customer needs. Xerox will be authorized to sell HP PCs, displays and accessories to its commercial customers through DaaS. HP will also make Xerox’s cloud-based content management platform DocuShare Flex available on its commercial PCs distributed in the U.S.

Epson Introduces New High-Volume Monochrome Inkjet MFP

On May 29th, Epson America announced a new high-volume A3 monochrome inkjet multi-functional printer, the WorkForce Enterprise WF-M20590.  This announcement expands the company’s corporate inkjet line-head printer portfolio and joins the 100 ISO ppm WorkForce Enterprise Color WF-C20590 and the 75 ISO ppm WorkForce Enterprise Color WF-C17590 launched in 2018.  According to Epson, The new high-speed monochrome inkjet device was designed to offer dealers and customers alike a monochrome option at this speed range. It also provides a portfolio of high-speed inkjet MFPs to offer to their channel partners.

Powered by Epson’s patented PrecisionCore ® line-head technology the WF-M20590 delivers high-volume, 100 ISO ppm monochrome printing and uses up to 50 percent less power than traditional mono lasers while keeping operating costs down.  Equipped with a maximum paper capacity of 5,350 sheets and an optional finisher for stacking and stapling the WF-M20590 is designed for faster workflow and larger print jobs. A large 9-inch color touch display makes copy controls easy to complete along with support for direct scan to email or the cloud. The paper trays support up to 13” x 19” while a dual-head single pass scanner can simultaneously scan both sides of a 2-sided document up to 110 ipm and the high capacity ink cartridges provide up to 60,000 pages before first ink replacement is required.

Epson Re-ignites OEM Market with Precision Core Printheads

WHEN DID SNEAKERS BECOME ACCEPTABLE BUSINESS ATTIRE?

I haven’t done the rounds of many exhibitions the last few years. My focus area of office print is generally served by Vendor specific events and the one global event the industry had, CeBIT has now finally been put to bed. So I was quite surprised at my first visit to ISE (Integrated Systems Europe) 2019 in Amsterdam. It was full, thriving and so many people were wearing sneakers.

Does this have something to do with the meeting of two worlds that ISE has emerged from?  The vibrant Audio Visual (AV) high tech hardware focussed industry and the IT world that can integrate practically anything without having to heed to standards or obligations?

Founded in 2004 and boosting 3500 visitors that year, the exhibition has grown to some 1400 exhibitors and an expected 90,000 visitors in 2019. For me, it felt far more than that. The growth has undoubtedly been supported by the portfolio breadth of AV boasting 8k, curved as well as inflatable screens and flashy displays and its acceptance across many horizontal and vertical sectors. What attracted me most to the show however, was the connection to IT and looking at how the AV industry hooks up with business IT, the hub of our digital world today. I see a lot of parallels to the office printing industry and I knew this industry was in a similar stage of disruption when I saw the likes of Google & Uber speaking about workplace trends at ISE 2019. A Trip Way Back in Time

On demand production print digital front ends (DFEs) began their competitive march in the late 1990s when Scitex Corporation announced its entry into the print on demand (POD) space by launching the Spontane printing system. The solution was an OEM version of the Fuji Xerox Docucolor 40. During that same timeframe, Scitex also developed a DFE version of its Brisque Prepress system and adapted it for the on-demand market. This announcement started a high-end competitive DFE battle between EFI, Scitex, and to some extent ColorBus.

Digital CMYK+ Ushers in a New Crop of Design Enthusiasts

Designing for offset print is nothing new; the PDF revolution is a distant memory at this point and the “how to design for print” guides are long gone. For quite some time, designers have understood how to extend gamut and design for that hit of varnish. With that said, designing for these offset jobs was always difficult and somewhat restrictive to the creative process. Any creative liberties typically added a significant amount of time to the process because prepress often needed to make corrections to the designers file for reliable printing. As a result, commercial printers have always had a love/hate relationship with the creative members of the design community. This all began to change when the HP Indigo Digital Presses began to roll out 7-color liquid toner capabilities. It was still important to educate the design community, but not in terms of capability—the focus shifted to learning how best to design a clean file for prepress.
