Canon Launches varioPRINT iX-Series of Sheetfed Presses

On April 1, 2020, Canon announced the latest update to its varioPRINT series of digital printers. Designed with commercial printers in mind, the varioPRINT iX-Series offers a wide variety of capabilities to improve automation, productivity, and media handling. Following on the success of the original varioPRINT platform that was introduced in 2015, this announcement demonstrates Canon’s continued efforts to combine digital capabilities with the quality and productivity of offset.

Canon’s varioPRINT iX-Series

The varioPRINT iX-Series is capable of producing over 9,000 SRA3 images per hour (320 A4 pages per minute) with over 90% average uptime and no need for daily calibration or maintenance. This makes it particularly suitable for customers whose print volumes exceed one million A4 pages per month. The press also features an extended media range with compatibility from 60 to 350 gsm, making it compatible with a wide variety of commercial applications.

Who is Investing in Smart Workplace?

“Smartness” is all the rage, but how far are Smart devices and solutions making it into the workplace? Keypoint Intelligence asked 260 IT decision-makers across the UK & Germany and discovered some interesting things including who is likely to invest and in what.

By way of definition, let’s start with what is Smart workplace?

In the first instance, it’s a reaction to leading trends and soft influencers that mould our working day: The consumerisation of IT has led us to expect more from office technology; changing workstyles are upon us whether from a location perspective or generational influence; the acceleration of technology means we are in a constant mode of change. In addition, digital transformation is all around us and shaping our lives. Smart technology is not new: but it has fundamentally changed the way we do so many things. From phones, to digital assistants, thermostats, lights and blinds that make life so much easier. A smart workplace is one in which employees can perform their tasks or work more efficiently by using smart devices.  The trend is in high demand to improve the customer experience, methods of predictive maintenance and the general efficiency of processes. The increasing adoption of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, IoT and automation are expected to support the growth of the smart workplace market worldwide.

Keypoint Intelligence Forecast Continued Growth in Business Inkjet & A4 Color Laser Shipments through 2023 in North America and Western Europe

While the overall office equipment markets in NA and WE are mature, Keypoint Intelligence/InfoTrends expect continued growth in A4 Color Laser and Business Inkjet Segment 3 & 4 according to recently published SF Printer and MFP Hardware Forecasts for both regions. In addition, the shift from SF printers to multifunctional devices will continue. According to the forecast, in North America, SF Laser printers represented 45% of total shipments in 2018 and are expected to decline to 40% of devices compared with MF shipments which will grow from 55% to 60% by 2023.  While in Western Europe MF shipments will grow from 56% to 58% of total shipments during the same period.

In addition, total NA office color laser shipments are also expected to outperform monochrome devices during the same period growing from 35% of total shipments to 40% by 2023. While in Western Europe, office color laser is expected to grow from 40% of total shipments to 41% during the same period. While the overall market for both regions will remain relatively flat to a slight decline the shift from SF to MF devices and from monochrome to color will continue to impact the overall office equipment market. The biggest opportunity for growth is within the office color laser A4 segments (3-4) for both regions.  In North America A4 Color MF devices are forecasted to grow at a 6.8% CAGR through 2023.

Business Inkjet Segments Continue to Grow

In addition to the growth in A4 color laser MFPs, Keypoint Intelligence/InfoTrends forecast shows growth in Business Inkjet Segments 3 and 4 through the same period. Business Inkjet Segment 3 is expected to grow at 6% CAGR in North America and 2.3% CAGR in Western Europe.  The majority of unit growth will be in A4 MFPs in this business inkjet segment with new models that offer longer life consumables and feature-rich product offerings. This new breed of inkjet devices offers an attractive alternative to laser particularly within the SMB office environment with standard wireless connectivity, high yield consumables and in some cases, comparable cost per page to laser. Furthermore, Inkjet Segment 4 is expected to grow at 9.7 CAGR in North America and 6.2% CAGR by 2023 in Western Europe during the same period, driven by a wider acceptance of page-wide ink technology and new robust high-speed color inkjet devices entering this market segment.

Keypoint Intelligence – InfoTrends (InfoTrends) recently questioned respondents in the United States and Western Europe about the digital and analog print applications they offered for sale. The responses for both sides of the Atlantic Ocean are outlined in the charts below.

Recently, Keypoint Intelligence analysts published a new Market & Vendor Insight report: MFP Platforms, App Ecosystems, & Cloud Readiness. In this document, we identified the trends surrounding multifunction printer software platforms as well as their associated app ecosystems and cloud readiness features, laid out the competitive landscape in this area, and showed how major OEMs performed in our latest platform and apps ecosystem evaluation (for which cloud readiness is a new scoring rubric).

WHEN DID SNEAKERS BECOME ACCEPTABLE BUSINESS ATTIRE?

I haven’t done the rounds of many exhibitions the last few years. My focus area of office print is generally served by Vendor specific events and the one global event the industry had, CeBIT has now finally been put to bed. So I was quite surprised at my first visit to ISE (Integrated Systems Europe) 2019 in Amsterdam. It was full, thriving and so many people were wearing sneakers.

Does this have something to do with the meeting of two worlds that ISE has emerged from?  The vibrant Audio Visual (AV) high tech hardware focussed industry and the IT world that can integrate practically anything without having to heed to standards or obligations?

Founded in 2004 and boosting 3500 visitors that year, the exhibition has grown to some 1400 exhibitors and an expected 90,000 visitors in 2019. For me, it felt far more than that. The growth has undoubtedly been supported by the portfolio breadth of AV boasting 8k, curved as well as inflatable screens and flashy displays and its acceptance across many horizontal and vertical sectors. What attracted me most to the show however, was the connection to IT and looking at how the AV industry hooks up with business IT, the hub of our digital world today. I see a lot of parallels to the office printing industry and I knew this industry was in a similar stage of disruption when I saw the likes of Google & Uber speaking about workplace trends at ISE 2019. HP acquires Apogee

On the 1st August 2018, HP Inc signed a definitive agreement to acquire all shares of Apogee.

The UK based office equipment dealer claims to be Europe’s largest independent provider of print outsourced services and document and process technology. The transaction values Apogee as of closing at GBP380m

Why Apogee?

This acquisition is a continuation of HP’s strategy to expand its contractual sales strategy and disrupt the A3 office market which began with HP’s acquisition of Samsung Printing in September 2016. Making Efficient Workflows: 2018 Solimar User Conference

San Diego is known for being a hub of invention, from inkjet development to dynamic software solutions. Solimar Systems is embedded in that innovation hub, with 27 years of providing solutions to companies with workflow challenges. Their 2018 User Conference in San Diego (May 8-10) brought together their top users to share their solutions, learn about new features and provide feedback to the Solimar technical team. I am a huge fan of user conferences for the networking opportunities they bring for both the solutions staff and the customers. Face to face is always the best way to gain trust among users and for users to develop all-important relationships.

This year’s event began with a Customer Advisory Council meeting that included a Keypoint Intelligence Keynote: Like Childred, Your Workflow Needs Attention! The council consists of 23 Solimar users who meet on a regular cadence to provide guidance. The goal of the keynote was to talk through the power of workflow automation in driving efficiency and profitability. We are advocates of workflow assessments, as are the team at Solimar Systems, so the presentation walked through a ten step review of workflow processes, with supporting data from the latest Keypoint Intelligence North American Software Investment Survey.

The most interesting takeaways from the Customer Advisory meetings was the diversity of issues faced by Print Service providers of all sizes, and the variety of approaches they take to move toward efficiency. We heard from companies that approach workflow with multiple solutions and some that approach with a single-threaded workflow approach, all using the Solimar products to add efficiency to their production processing.

The Solimar User Group encompasses the Advisory Council and an extended group of Solimar Users. The event included presentations from partners, including Konica Minolta, SCREEN, Ironsides Technology, Reality BLU, BCC Software, and RISO. Customer panels included deep dives into Operational Efficiencies, Differentiated Services, Compliance and Security, and Customer Experience, allowing customers to share their best practices.

Two keynotes touched on tangential workflow issues. The first was the Keypoint Intelligence presentation by Pat McGrew: The Workflow Revolution: Are You On Board? The goal was to provide guidance on how to approach workflow as a moonshot, moving toward the best level of optimization possible. The theme was that operational excellence requires an executive commitment and an open mind to allow change. The goal is Smart Print Manufacturing that embraces automation.

The second keynote came from Tim Cooper, Chief Enterprise Architect at Harland Clarke. If you have not heard a Tim Cooper presentation you have missed something special. Tim has decades of experience in workflows and is a deep thinker when it comes to optimization and breaking down barriers. His presentation was A Discussion on Workflow Facts that Can Lead to Wrong Conclusions. He walked through how looking at data in a vacuum can lead to the wrong architecture and implode operational efficiencies.

Tim shared how he arrived at his philosophy of workflow, and how using the Solimar solutions he was able to wrangle multiple, disparate workflows in to a single workflow, and reduce processing time from more than 3000 hours to under a couple of days. That drew gasps from PSPs in the room struggling with the same challenges.

The true value of user group meetings comes from the networking and sharing, as well as guidance that analysts can supply to provide guidance for decisions about the next investments and architecture changes need to be made. The Solimar team did an excellent job of tuning the mix of technical sessions focused on products and solutions with partner presentations and announcements, and customer panels.

Immersive Imaging at NAB 2018

NAB 2018, the annual trade show of the National Association of Broadcasters, was held April 9-12 in Las Vegas. Show organizers were expecting more than 102,000 attendees and 1,700 exhibitors. A small section of the Las Vegas Convention Center’s North Hall was designated as the Immersive Storytelling Pavilion, where about twenty exhibitors were showing 360° and 180° cameras and related products.
