A Landa 2014 Update

The Landa marketing machine had gone a little quiet recently. No word from them at Graph Expo or All in Print China. It wasn’t like them to be so reserved but that all changed this week with a media push that included a video showing their progress with their B1-format cut-sheet digital color printer; a blog by Benny Landa; a couple of quotes from printers who were shown samples (see more on this below); and a few other things such as the announcement of two new hires, a partnership with AVT, and an award to Benny Landa (the Ernst & Young Israeli Entrepreneur of the Year).

Landa said that it will be starting beta tests sometime in 2015 after potential beta customers visit the Landa headquarters in Israel in March. It seems likely that Landa should have a market-ready product by drupa (May 2016). The initial focus will be on the Landa S10 B1-format version. InfoTrends does not expect to see much from the other concepts (in different formats, cut-sheet and web) until the S10 is further along. A new blog published yesterday on the Landa web site says that there will be S10 beta sites in Israel, the U.K., Germany, and the United States.

I found the customer quotes from Tukaiz and Firstan Packaging to be the most interesting part of the announcements:

  • “There hasn’t been anything this exciting in the print industry in a long time. The 40 in. samples we saw are extremely encouraging. Landa has made fantastic progress. Many of the quality problems that we saw at drupa have been overcome and we can see that the potential benefits of Nanography are huge. The business opportunities that a 40 in. digital printing press brings are enough to make your head spin.” – Dan Defino, Tukaiz
  • “We consider the Landa press an absolute game changer. It was exciting to see full size sheets as we have wanted to see them for some time. We thought the print quality was excellent, especially in certain areas of certain jobs. Marketing departments for markets like high-end confectionary and cosmetics will think ‘wow’ and have a eureka moment when they realize they can do smaller runs at high quality.” Paul Hartwig, Firstan Packaging

These comments mean a lot. There are many people who would like the same opportunity to see samples and are waiting for the point in time when Landa will hand them out at a trade show for all to see. That representatives from companies like Tukaiz and Firstan Packaging had glowing things to say about the progress is important. Also important were a few tidbits from the video and blog that underscore the message that Landa is on track to have a released product (the S10) at drupa in May of 2016. This, of course, is well behind the originally planned schedule, but the Landa delays are comparable to the well-intentioned statements of many other vendors who announced larger format digital products at drupa 2012. This should make 2015 a very interesting year for the B2 (and larger) production color digital printing market.
