Xerox Turns Over the Development of its FreeFlow Print Server Digital Front End to EFI

Today Xerox and EFI announced a move that extends their longstanding partnership: Xerox is selling its FreeFlow Print Server digital front end business to EFI. EFI will manage production and support of the existing FreeFlow Print Server and later will integrate it with EFI’s Fiery digital front end.

This next generation digital front end will integrate with EFI’s Productivity Suites, including print management information systems such as PACE, PrintSmith Vision, Monarch, and Radius ERP. It will also integrate with Xerox FreeFlow Core and XMPie workflows as well as third-party prepress solutions from Agfa Apogee, Heidelberg Prinect, and Kodak Prinergy. There is also the future opportunity to leverage JDF more effectively. EFI reports that its Fiery DFE is currently the only JDF certified digital front end. This opens the opportunity, through an API, to allow integration to any other applications.

Delivering on Customer Engagement at the XMPie User’s Conference

Earlier this week the XMPie User’s Group conference was held in Miami, Florida. The theme of the conference was “The Art of Customer Engagement” and brought together users of XMPie software from around the globe for three days of networking and learning. The opening keynote titled “On Bridging Print and Digital” was delivered by Jacob Aizikowitz, president and founder of XMPie. Jacob urged attendees to become digital first, focusing as much on digital technologies as print – a point driven home by the fact that 75% of marketing spend is expected to be on digital channels by 2019.

XMPie continues to evolve and expand its product offerings to support a digital-first mindset which was reinforced by the introduction of Open XM at the show. Open XM is an XMPie technology stack that can be incorporated into any website without relying on any specific design tool.

User-driven conferences continue to provide an ideal environment for learning and networking with other service providers who face the same opportunities and challenges. This was evident in the sessions and conversations I had with attendees at the show, from discussing pricing strategies to users trading contact information to help out with technical issues once they arrive back home.

Fast Company at Xerox Focus Forward

Bill Taylor, co-founder of Fast Company magazine, knows a lot about innovative companies and how they operate. Here are a few of my favorite Bill Taylor lines:

  • The only sustainable form of business leadership is thought leadership
  • It’s not good enough to be pretty good at everything. The middle of the road is the road to nowhere.
  • Originality is the acid test of your strategy

Bill’s one-liners fit the definition of an aphorism rather nicely. (An aphorism is ‘a brief statement of a principle.’) And though I like a good aphorism, I like Bill’s view on innovative companies even more. Like the dialysis provider, DaVita, that let its employees vote on the new company name. (DaVita used to be called Total Renal Care.) Or Lexus, which built a brand new luxury brand to compete with the Cadillacs and BMWs of the world. Or Cirque du Soleil, which reinvented what a circus could be (without animals or big name acts).

Tracking the Digital Market through Graph Expo Booth Space

Since 2004, InfoTrends has analyzed the Graph Expo show floor maps as an indicator of market changes. We’ve ranked the exhibitors by the amount of space they have on the show floor. These rankings are compiled by measuring the published show floor map. Initially InfoTrends began conducting this exercise to show the impact of the digital vendors on a trade show that had been dominated over the years by traditional printing press vendors. This point has long since been made. For all practical purposes, as one looks at the list of top vendors in recent years, Graph Expo has become dominated by digital exhibitors. Heidelberg was the number one exhibitor until 2008, when it did not exhibit, and it probably was the top exhibitor for many shows prior to Graph Expo 2004. For the past two Graph Expo shows however, Xerox has been the company with the most exhibit space.

Kodak’s Pipeline of Innovation (Part 2) and Other Post-Print 09 Thoughts

I wrote about Kodak’s Pipeline of Innovation in an earlier blog before the show, but the fact of the matter is that you really had to see it to appreciate it. Once I saw it, I liked it even though I arrived as a skeptic. It’s true that the user interface needs some work and the supporting detail could be improved and expanded upon, but I thought it worked well and I believe that many who saw it there would agree. Kodak also did a good job of promoting the Pipeline of Innovation within its booth, encouraging show attendees via frequent promotions to try it out. It was important too that the Kodak employees in the booth were on board with this innovative approach, and I saw every indication that they were.
