Rising Labour Cost Spurs Interest in Chinese Workflow Market

Other Posts
 May 22, 2013

By any standard, the Chinese workflow market is years behind the Western industry. Adoption of Computer-to-Plate (CtP) has just started in China, and there is strong reliance on manual labour and processes.

However, unlike Western markets that took twenty years to migrate from CtP to digital, the transition in China might go much quicker as labour wages are spiralling. Whereas western markets experienced relatively stable labour cost when they transitioned from analogue to digital, it is estimated that print-industry related labour cost will rise with about 20% annually. Especially in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guanzhou (the so-called Tier 1 cities) it is difficult for print service providers to attract and retain (unskilled) staff due to high demand for workers. This year, it’s estimated that Chinese labour rates have overtaken those in Mexico.

 Jan 8, 2013

When web-to-print first entered the market with the onset of eCommerce in the 1990s, it was defined as a commercial prepress process that bridges the gap between digital content online and commercial print production. In the most basic terms, web-to-print was used to assist in facilitating the process for Internet based job ordering, submission, tracking, and collaboration. Now a few decades later, web-to-print vendors have expanded upon their original offerings. Originally for the e-enablement of businesses processes, web-to-print now goes beyond, to assist in the creation and tracking of multi-channel marketing campaigns, maintaining brand consistency, and acting as a connector between other online services.

Will HP be third time lucky with a scheme to promote print to small business?

For a second time HP has shelved a scheme to drive print volume to SMB and micro businesses.

Print Station, which began in South Africa and was eventually rolled out to 57 sites in 16 countries across the world, will begin a controlled close down later this year. For many in the industry its demise may be the first they heard of it but it’s likely that they will remember a similar scheme from 2009 called MarketSplash, which was scaled back in reaction of an outcry from PSPs, mostly in the US.

For lightning to to strike in the same place twice, especially for a dominant force in the printing industry like HP, is bad luck to say the least. Read more »

This week Heidelberg extended its deal to sell EFI Vutek wide-format digital presses to Canada, having begun the alliance in the USA in January.

Under the deal Heidelberg is responsible for sales, distribution, installation, training and support of EFI Vutek’s GS2000, GS 3200 and GS5000r machines. Heidelberg will distribute inks, parts, consumables, accessories and upgrades for the printers.

In EFI’s press release about the Canadian deal it is interesting that the inks will be sold under Heidelberg’s own Saphira brand rather than EFI Vutek’s brand, which fits with the German offset giant’s strategy of increasing its revenues from supplies and services. Read more »
