EFI Extends its Reach into Textile and Grand Format Segments via the Acquisitions of Reggiani and Matan

On July 1st EFI made two announcements: One was the acquisition of the Israeli Matan Digital Printer, a supplier of grand format printing solutions and the second was the acquisition of Reggiani Macchine a supplier of high end textile printing equipment.

Both acquisitions are part of EFI’s stated strategy to invest and grow its product portfolio in adjacent markets and technologies. Workflow and inkjet have been at the forefront of acquisitions by EFI in the past and is likely to continue in the future as this strategy evolves. This strategy enables EFI to leapfrog some graphic arts suppliers and enter into industrial segments that are emerging as adopters of digital technology as a means to dramatically change their respective industry segments’ supply chains and transition mass production markets into mass customization digitally enabled segments. Xaar making a Comeback in China Wide Format

Rapper L.L. Cool J has a lyric that goes “don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years” and that is kind of what Xaar would probably say about its new print head launch:  that Xaar is a major supplier to the wide format digital graphics market and China is an important part of that. However, Xaar led the emergence of the large wide format graphics business in China in its early days, but as the segment became increasingly commoditized many Chinese wide format printer manufacturers expanded their wide format equipment portfolios.

Xerox and EFI – Making the Transformation

Xerox and EFI announced their 4Q 2012 earnings yesterday. Both companies continue to execute on strategies to transform, but are moving in different directions. There are lessons to be learned for the industry.

Xerox – Services for Growth, Technology for Profit

Xerox has made it very clear that they in the midst of a shift to a Services-led strategy. The company is managing its Technology business for profits and cash generation by lowering the cost basis and investing in services areas.

Xerox CEO Ursula Burns opened the earnings call by saying “Xerox is a company going through a seismic transformation.” The financial results show how far Xerox has transformed. The Services segment of the company grew 7% and is now 52% of the business and the Technology segment declined 8% and is now 48% of total revenue. For the first time, Xerox generated more in profits from Services than from Technology.

Can Roland roll in Wide format UV?

Roland DGA is the leader in wide format digital printer-cutters, a fact the company reinforced and built on yesterday with the introduction of the new 54-inch wide VersaUV LEC-540.

This is not the first wide format UV-curable inkjet printer from Roland, but at 54-inches, compared to the 30-inch wide LEC 300 & 330, it is the widest and fastest and should have much greater appeal to those in the signage and graphics markets where Roland has a very strong brand. Roland should have a good opportunity in the low-end of the wide format UV-curable market, which is somewhat unsettled with the lack of any especially strong global competitors. The specifications on the new 54-inch wide printer look good, with 1440 x 1440 resolution, built-in front and back media tables and low power consumption, but one of the more interesting differentiators is the three ink configurations. Seen at SGIA – Productivity enhancements

One of the things that is shaping up in the wide format market is the increasing focus on overall productivity. At SGIA HP launched a new high-speed wide format printer called the FB7500. This printer is the product of years of research in high-speed production environments, specifically screen printing environments. In addition to using HP’s X2 print head technology, and new formulation of UV-curable inkjet inks, the new FB7500 has what the company calls a “three-quarters” automatic feeding system, which reduces the labor required to run the printer and improves the media load times because the system loads and lines up the media automatically. What I like about this new automation feature is that it is a lot like the kind of automation advances we’ve seen in the offset market that have been beneficial to that class of equipment in terms of units sold. One of the people who worked on the FB7500 told me that they have visited production printing establishments for years to get input on what characteristics of wide format digital printers need to be improved, the features of the FB7500 are a direct result of a lot of that work.
