Back in October 2015, Lexmark announced plans to explore strategic alternatives for its business which many took to mean they were exploring a major move like splitting the company in separate two entities, selling a significant portion of the company, or to sell the entire company as-is. Six months later, Lexmark announced on April 19, 2016 that it entered into a definitive merger agreement with a consortium of investors led by Apex Technology Co., Ltd. (Apex) and PAG Asia Capital (PAG), under which Lexmark will be acquired for $40.50 per share, representing a 30% premium to the price back in October (the day before Lexmark announced they were exploring strategic alternatives). The largest remanufacturer of printing supplies, Clover Holdings, announced that it has acquired K+U Printware, a toner remanufacturer based in Germany, and its wholly-owned subsidiary for empties collection, Collecture. K+U Printware was founded in 1990 and is headquarted in Ettenheim, Germany, specializing in the remanufacture of toner cartridges. Collecture started in 2000 and collects printers, cartridges, mobile phones, and small electronics. The two organizations will continue to operate independently in their respective markets but will work together with Clover where synergies exist. Read more »

Every year InfoTrends updates its five-year print on demand (POD) forecast, with the latest edition now covering the years from 2011 to 2016. The forecast looks at placements, print volumes and revenues achieved in digital production printing. It is becoming obvious that digital printing is not a niche process anymore. The retail value of digital printing (excluding office, home and large format printing) in the U.S. and Western Europe was $63 billion in 2011 when considering all production printing environments from copy shop and small in-plant to large commercial printers and data center service bureaus. InfoTrends expects revenues to grow by about 4% annually.
What is noticeable in the current forecast is that the growth rate for color impressions in production copying and digital printing has accelerated compared to the previous forecasts. In fact, the growth rate is expected to increase to 18.5% CAGR compared to almost 15% in the last forecast for the United States. Continuous-feed inkjet color and, to some extent, the expected new B2 devices are responsible for this growth. Since there is an increased color share in this forecast, color impressions will have a more pronounced influence on the total POD volume and associated revenues. The color share of all U.S. impressions is expected to grow from 23% in 2011 to 48% in 2016. The decline rate of black and white impressions, however, remains almost unchanged. Western Europe will show an even stronger shift towards color, with an average annual growth of 20.4% for impressions made on color devices- opposed to a decline in impressions on black & white devices of over 7% per year. The European market is already more inclined towards color print and by 2015 more digital impressions in Western Europe will be done on color devices than on black & white devices. This is quite a shift for a market in which black & white accounted for 80% of impressions only five years ago.

In April 2012, InfoTrends conducted a Web-based survey in specific regions of Latin America, including Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. This Multi-Client study offers an in-depth view of the supplies market in Latin America, including consumers’ preferences about supplies and aftermarket activities. In conducting this survey, we hoped to gain a better understanding of the dynamics within this market, which include widespread supplies counterfeiting and heavy use of refill services for supplies. A total of 600 home respondents and 900 office respondents qualified for participation in this survey, with respondents from Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina being equally represented (200 each for home; 300 each for office).

According to an article on channelpartner.de, Samsung is launching their first inkjet printers this week; although they will have Samsung’s own design and features they will use Kodak’s inkjet technology. Channelpartner.de received the news from the retail community, which is claiming that the Samsung consumer inkjet devices have already hit the shelves. Read more »

In October, the International Trade Commission (ITC) issued a notice of final determination finding a violation of Section 337, issuing a general exclusion order (GEO), and terminating the investigation in Certain Inkjet Cartridges with Printheads and Components Thereof (Inv. No. 337-TA-723). With this general exclusion, three major vendors, HP, Epson, and Lexmark, now have general exclusion orders to help curb primarily new build products entering the United States from any source that affect certain claims of their supplies patents. On August 23, 2010, Lexmark International, Inc. announced that it had filed a patent infringement complaint with the United States International Trade Commission against 24 companies that manufacture, import, and sell replacement cartridges for various Lexmark laser printers and multifunction devices. In its first move to retail, the new Dell NextLife (www.nextlife.com) remanufactured inkjet cartridges are now available in all Best Buy locations and on the store’s website (www.bestbuy.com). The consumer electronics retailer carries about half of the higher volume NextLife cartridges in the stores. To promote the new products, advertising in Best Buy fliers will begin next week.
