Manufacturing Industry Ripe for Automation Opportunities

InfoTrends recently published its second in-depth primary research study on the manufacturing industry within the Business Process Automation Consulting Service. The manufacturing industry is a dynamic market with several sub-industries that can vary greatly in size and output demand, and because of these widespread differences, certain processes may require more exhaustive and paper-intensive workflows. InfoTrends broke down the manufacturing industry into four key workflow areas: 1) Product Planning/Design, 2) Procurement, 3) Production, and 4) Fulfillment. Within those areas, we broke down the industry further and discovered several major manual processes that demonstrate the biggest areas for automation opportunity for vendors: 1) Sample testing and trials, 2) Quality assurance/product inspections, 3) On-site supplier audits, and 4) Warehousing.

The following chart is an example of one of the most paper-intensive areas in manufacturing — Sample Testing and Trials. Due to the high frequency of the sample testing and trials process (occurring on average of five times per product) and paper being used roughly 38% of the time, automating this area will improve processing times and compliance initiatives (both of which are the top goals and objectives for manufacturing organizations today).

Office Solutions Market Projected to Reach $2.8B by 2017

InfoTrends recently published its annual North America Network Document Solutions Forecast: 2012-2017 for the Office Solutions market, which demonstrates solid growth at a CAGR of 8.5% with total revenues reaching above $2.8 billion by 2017. Broken out by revenue category, distribution channels, and company size, InfoTrends provides YOY revenue adjustments within the Device Management, Output Management, Capture Workflow, and Document Management areas, including mobile and SaaS solutions.  Overall, capture/workflow, document management and output management show the strongest growth rates, while device management is predicted to generate smaller revenue numbers. Because MPS offerings are shifting from traditional hardware to advanced solutions engagements, and the surge of mobile and cloud solutions continue to transform the office environment, InfoTrends expects medium-sized organizations and business process automation solutions to drive long-term growth opportunity.

3 Steps to Avoid a $1.5M HIPAA Violation

New HIPAA compliance requirements for healthcare IT vendors could result in $1.5 million in security violations if vendors do not sign a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with customers. Effective March 26, 2013, the HIPAA Omnibus Rule governing data security puts more responsibility on IT vendors, or “business associates” according to HIPAA, to secure Protected Health Information (PHI) when under a vendor’s control. Previously, covered entities, such as healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics, and insurers, were mostly responsible for complying with HIPAA privacy and security regulations. Now, vendors, including cloud storage and service providers, who maintain, store, create, receive or transmit PHI are also directly accountable for security breaches and liable for HIPAA compliance requirements. Was your state given an “F” in digital learning?

Most likely. Only six states — Utah, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Virginia, and Kansas — received an “A” or “B” on the 2012 Digital Learning Report Card, whereas 37 states received a “D” or “F.” What does this mean? Well, states have a lot of work to do. But vendors have a lot of opportunities to help digitize and automate this market.

Are Your Solutions Advancing the Healthcare Market?

Earlier this month, I attended the HIMSS 2013 conference, arguably the largest healthcare IT conference in the country. HIMSS attracted over 1,000 exhibitors and over 40,000 attendees, including physicians, nurses, IT administration, and healthcare providers. Mobile health (mHealth), integration, collaboration, and analytics were a big focus this year, however, much of this new mobile health technology already has widespread presence within the market. The bigger questions now are whether healthcare organizations are utilizing this technology, how it’s being implemented, and what the impacts are on patient care. Even more importantly, though, is how OEMs are addressing these trends, as many of them maintain a heavy focus on copiers and scanners rather than mHealth initiatives.

Mobile, Mobile, Mobile – Florida Education Technology Conference Highlights

If there was one word I could use to describe FETC 2013, it’d be mobile. Two words? iPads and Security. The exhibit hall contained a variety of vendors offering course/class management software, education social media platforms, grading software, to mobile device management vendors; and almost all of them included a mobile component with their offering. While the conference focused more around the K-12 market, many of the exhibitors played within the higher education space. Attendees included teachers, administrators, and IT directors/coordinators with either two major concerns in mind: how can I optimize or secure my current mobile device infrastructure or how do I implement a successful BYOD program?
