Making Heidelberg Fit for the Future

Ralf Schlozer
 Jun 18, 2014

The announcement of annual results is always a good opportunity to provide an update on company strategy or present a new organisational alignment. The latest Heidelberger Druckmaschinen annual press conference, however, had far deeper implications than that.

A main message to investors, debtors, and the whole graphic arts community was that Heidelberg delivered on its promise of returning to profitability. Although the net revenue of €4 million was not particularly impressive, it is nevertheless an encouraging sign because it implies a turnaround. In the last five years Heidelberg has accrued a net loss of almost one billion Euros. While financial analysis will certainly have a feast on the numbers, the announced strategic reorganisation and several other organisational moves have important implications for the future of the company.

In the last year Heidelberg has conducted an in-depth analysis of the business areas the company is active in. They have been clustered into four strategic fields of action:
– Digital printing
– Service and consumables
– Sheet-fed Offset
– Weak margin operations Read more »

4 Wide Format Lessons from the Olympics

 Feb 6, 2014

The Olympics are starting soon and it got me thinking about some of the ways that competing in the Olympics parallels competing in the wide format digital printing market. I can think of four:

1. Prepare
People that compete at the Olympic level train for years for the games. Speed skaters work out 8-10 hours per days for months leading up to the games in anticipation of an event that may last for minutes if not seconds. Bode Miller, one of the most successful U.S. men’s downhill skiers of all time, was born in ski-country in New Hampshire, went to a ski academy in his youth and basically trained to be a downhill skier more-or-less his whole life. Many Olympians are like that. The point is that to compete at the highest levels they prepare at the highest levels, they don’t go in lightly. Print shops that invest in wide format technology and don’t have a committed strategy to make that a successful part of their business are not likely to find success in this competitive market.

The Lexmark/Brainware Acquisition: Just the beginning of an acquisition-filled year

Perceptive has been using Brainware’s IntelliCapture technology with their ImageNow software since 2009, so perhaps Lexmark’s acquisition isn’t too surprising. What is interesting, however, is how an increasing number of OEMs are shifting their focus on ISVs who can provide an added-value to what is currently lacking in their software portfolio. Last year, Lexmark acquired Pallas Athena, enabling them to expand in the EMEA region with a stronger focus on business process management and document management capabilities, while reinforcing the connection between Perceptive Software and Lexmark.

Now, Lexmark makes another acquisition under similar circumstances except with a document capture emphasis. Brainware will act as a division of Perceptive Software but will continue to work with their existing partners, like Oracle and KnowledgeLake. Brainware will maintain control of their data capture market which will help them grow their business much faster and drive product adoption through Lexmark’s and Perceptive’s customer base and channel partners.
