 Jun 19, 2013

These two videos cover print samples I collected at China Print 2013 (May 14-18, Beijing).

The first one includes examples from Scodix and Founder which show the use of metallic effects achieved through digital print and special substrates or laminates.

The second one includes a range of digital print samples including one from a Chinese vendor showing a technology demonstration of a UV inkjet cut-sheet printer.

You can find more print sample videos on the Jim Hamilton YouTube channel.

Indian Wedding Albums: Big Potential in a Growing Market

 Mar 19, 2013

The Indian graphic arts market as a whole is fascinating and fast growing. However, there is one area of particular interest for digital printing: the wedding industry. According to recent research, there are around 12,000 weddings held every day in India and around 1.5 million photos are taken on each of these wedding days. All of these marriages have the potential to drive the production of multiple wedding albums and related photo merchandise.

Two Video Commentaries on Graph Expo 2012

Jim Hamilton
 Oct 26, 2012

I’ve recorded two videos with a visual commentary on Graph Expo. One is a print sample video and the other looks at some of the ‘loot’ that an industry analyst like myself might come away from the show with (pens, mugs, thumb drives, books, etc.)

The print sample video includes examples from EFI, Graph-Tech, Heidelberg, HP, Kodak, Konica Minolta, MGI, Pitney Bowes, Scodix, and Xerox. Obviously this is just a small selection of samples from the show floor. If there are others you think I’ve overlooked, please send them my way (Jim Hamilton, InfoTrends, 97 Libbey Industrial Parkway, Weymouth, MA 02189).

The other video is not really about print, though virtually all of the items have a printed component. Instead they tell the story of what some of the exhibitors are doing to promote their brands.

Those interested in the marketing aspects of trade shows may also be interested in a photo presentation of large-format graphics hung or mounted in the space outside the halls. This presentation is accessible to InfoTrends Production group clients on our client web site and will also be available through the InfoTrends Report Store. An interesting comparison of the same type of large-format marketing graphics for drupa 2004, 2008, and 2012 is also available.

Eight Top Take-Aways from HP’s Pre-drupa Event

 Mar 20, 2012

HP held a pre-drupa press and analyst event in Israel last week. InfoTrends was represented by four analysts: Ralf SchlÅ‘zer, Bob Leahey, Lior Meron, and myself. What is particularly interesting about the top stories from this event is that many of HP’s announcements are emblematic of industry trends that we will see playing out at drupa. Here are eight of the top take-aways from that event:

  1. B2 Digital Takes a Step Forward — There are increasing signs that drupa 2012 could be the “B2 Digital drupa.” Fujifilm, Jadason, and Screen showed B2 Digital products at drupa 2008, but none of those have what I believe to be the key characteristics necessary for a successful digital product at that format size: duplex capability, the ability to draw from multiple drawers, and connection to in-line finishing. HP’s announcement of the Indigo 10000, which I have blogged about separately has all of these. HP, which was lagging behind Kodak and Xerox in format size, has now leapfrogged ahead, but there will be more to come. Cut-sheet inkjet products, including new ones from companies like Delphax, will push the definition of cut-sheet digital print beyond the bounds of a 12” by 18” sheet. The battle moving forward will be about features, acquisition price, and running cost.
