On May 7th and 8th over 650 professionals descended on the Hilton Midtown in New York City for Henry Stewart’s 12th annual DAM NY Conference to see and learn about all things related to digital asset management (DAM). This year’s theme centered on ‘The Art & Practice of Managing Digital Media – all from the user’s perspective’ and was a common viewpoint amongst many of the speakers. HP, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Media Beacon were the marquee sponsors. However, a bevy of other vendors and consulting organizations sponsored and/or spoke at the show.

InfoTrends has just released a major study on cloud computing in the production workflow market. In October and November 2013, InfoTrends surveyed over 600 print service providers (PSPs) in the U.S., Western Europe and Asia Pacific (incl. Japan). We also spoke with Digital Equipment & Workflow Vendors, Distributors, Cloud Services Providers, and Legal Experts to provide an in-depth understanding of how cloud computing is impacting the production workflow market.

The conclusions are not surprising: despite data security and bandwidth concerns, the cloud is rapidly gaining momentum. In the years to come, we can expect the share of subscription based solutions to grow quickly as vendors are moving more to software as a service (SaaS) but also PSPs are increasingly preferring an operational expense model rather than an upfront capital expense.

DocuWorld 2012: “From Documents to Value”

With nearly 400 people attending DocuWorld Orlando, DocuWare’s annual conference, this was their biggest event yet. For the first time, attendees included partners and customers, with roughly 100 end-users participating in educational sessions and gaining first-hand insight on new product developments. DocuWorld 2012 was held in Orlando, FL which includes DocuWare’s extensive Latin American partner community. Océ looks to the cloud to continue its reign in technical documents

The most significant news from Océ’s recent launches in the technical document sector was the move into the cloud in this sector of the market with two new tools, mobile print application MobilePlot and document distribution and management service Eneo. Both are responses to the changing work landscape and designed to make it simpler to use documents in the ever-more mobile, collaborative and complex environments that businesses operate in.

MobilePlot is an app available for Apple’s iPhone and iPad iOS devices as well as Android-based smart phones and tablets. It provides a simple scan and print workflow for registered users, which works with a range of Oce printers as long as they are on a wifi network. Up to five printers can be controlled at any one time by the app. From within the app print functions include control over number of copies, media, scaling and folding. It is also possible to scan to the app and to set up pre-set workflows. The app integrates with a number of third party tools include Adobe Acrobat, Evernote and Dropbox.

Eneo is a cloud-based Software as a service (SaaS) system for document distribution and management. It was developed to simplify the document workflow and to make it as easy as possible for the stakeholders to work with digital and printed documents when most appropriate. To support hard copy in the workflow it enables simple printing to connected devices on a user’s network or via third-party print service providers connected to the Eneo network. It also integrates with scanners to enable annotations and comments to be captured and tracked.

InfoPrint to Offer Cloud-Based Workflow Service

InfoPrint Solutions, a provider of digital transaction workflow management systems, has announced a Managed ADF Services offering. Based on a hosted version of its ProcessDirector workflow management solution (plus partner products), this solution enables InfoPrint to deploy and manage turnkey workflow solutions for its customers.

The managed ADF services offering is primarily developed for mid-market print businesses that face increasing demands surrounding print integrity, security, and regulatory compliance, but often do not have the necessary print IT expertise or capital to invest in solutions for those areas. The service capitalizes on InfoPrint’s long-standing history and expertise in this area and will be offered through a pay-as-you-go model. RR Donnelley Acquires Assets of Nimblefish Technologies

According to a press release from yesterday, RR Donnelley acquired the assets of Nimblefish Technologies, a provider of marketing automation software and solutions. From the press release:

R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company announced today that it has acquired the assets of San Francisco-based Nimblefish Technologies, a provider of multi-channel marketing services to leading retail, technology, telecom, hospitality and other customers. Nimblefish’s innovative software services include integrating direct mail, email, web, PURL and variable video components into multi-touch, multi-channel customer prospecting and engagement programs.

“Nimblefish will increase the range of multi-channel solutions that we provide to our customers,” said Thomas J. Quinlan III, RR Donnelley’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The addition of Nimblefish’s innovative products will enable our customers to draw on RR Donnelley for automated programs that touch customers and prospects with intelligent rules-based messaging that is responsive to their interests and actions. This will leverage our extensive digital platform which offers the ability to personalize communications in quantities from one to millions.”

As stated in the press release, RR Donnelley intends to leverage Nimblefish and its marketing automation technology to offer additional cross-media capabilities and services to its customers. This is an area that has been of increasing interest to print service providers of all sizes that are trying to offer more comprehensive multi-channel and digital marketing services. Read more »
