Over the past several years, marketers across all industries and categories have become obsessed with Millennials—what are the best ways to reach them and help them form meaningful connections with brands? Because Millennials have a unique sense of self and a non-traditional approach to life stages, marketing to this captivating generation has been a challenge. Marketers are only just beginning to understand Millennials, but there’s a whole new game in town with the rise of Generation Z. This is the first generation of consumers that was born into a digital world, and these individuals don’t know life without the Internet, smartphones, tablets, and social media. What are the best ways to engage with this up-and-coming and always-on generation?
Although generational start and end dates are imprecise, Millennials—also called Generation Y—generally include those individuals born between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s. Meanwhile, Generation Z individuals—also called Post-Millennials or the iGeneration—were born after 1995. As yet, there is little consensus about ending birth years for this group. Millennials were coming into young adulthood at the turn of the century, and the oldest of this group are now about 35. Some have been in the workforce for quite some time and have already begun to reshape Corporate America. The oldest Gen Z individuals are only beginning to graduate from high school/college and enter the professional workforce, so only time will tell what changes this group will bring to the workforce of tomorrow. Gen Zers may be too young to have affected the workplace as yet, but they are already having a profound impact on family purchasing habits and the retail marketplace.
In January 2017, IBM and the National Retail Foundation released a report entitled Uniquely Generation Z: What Brands Should Know About Today’s Youngest Consumers. This report surveyed over 15,000 Gen Z individuals between the ages of 13 and 21 and also conducted interviews with 20 Senior Marketing Executives to determine how these consumers engage with brands. During the golden days of digital camera sales, Best Buy was a dominant retailer. It offered consumers a wide selection of compact cameras at good prices. However, with compact camera sales waning, Best Buy has seen its influence on the market diminish, as consumers and vendors focus on more profitable digital interchangeable lens camera sales (DILCs). While Best Buy has sold DILCs, the selection was limited, merchandising was lacking, lens selection was limited and locked away behind glass, and in-store personnel were not trained to answer probing technical questions.

The adoption of photo merchandise products into the mass market may not be happening as quickly or on as broad a scale as many in the photo market had hoped, but InfoTrends is seeing in our research that these products are getting more penetration into the U.S. market. In the consumer survey portion of our U.S. Photo Merchandise End-User Survey, InfoTrends found that over 37% of respondents said they had purchased photo merchandise items in the last year, with the survey specifically asking about photo books, photo cards, photo calendars and specialty photo prints (which includes canvas, photo panels, collage prints and posters/enlargements over 11” x 14”). This was up from just over 32% in our 2011 survey, so there was a notable increase in the buyer population.
It’s great to see that more people are buying photo merchandise, but there is still a lot of opportunity to bring new buyers into the market. In that same study mentioned above, we asked the entire survey population of over 1,500 people if they plan to buy photo merchandise products in the next 12 months. Photo cards were the most likely product to be purchased, followed by specialty photo prints. There are still a sizable percentage of respondents that don’t plan to buy anything, but an average of around 24% said “maybe,” and it’s this group that needs to be reached. InfoTrends research has consistently shown that once someone buys photo merchandise, there’s a very good likelihood that they will buy again, so getting them to make that first purchase is key.

Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax have been in the news lately for declining revenue and profits. The office superstores (OSS) face an immense challenge to transform as there is less demand for some of their biggest sources of profit (ink and toner cartridges) and less use of one of their biggest assets (retail stores). How they pivot at this point will likely determine their direction for years to come.

With more consumers using smartphones as everyday cameras, vendors in the photo output market are striving to come up with easier ways to print photos captured on mobile devices. Walgreens is one of the leading retailers in the U.S. market, and has been proactive in going after the mobile photo market. Back in July, they introduced a developer portal that allows third-party software developers to integrate the Walgreens QuickPrints software development kit (SDK) into their apps, which will enable photo printing directly from iOS and Android mobile devices. The QuickPrints SDK is already implemented into seven partner apps, and is the first time that Walgreens has provided an open interface for developers to integrate their in-store services.

According to an article on channelpartner.de, Samsung is launching their first inkjet printers this week; although they will have Samsung’s own design and features they will use Kodak’s inkjet technology. Channelpartner.de received the news from the retail community, which is claiming that the Samsung consumer inkjet devices have already hit the shelves. Read more »
