What is the most loathed household task for Americans? It turns out that it is cleaning bathrooms. The second most common response, however, was paying bills. In fact, 32% of the 2,000 consumers we surveyed had missed a payment due date in the last year, most often because they simply forgot to pay. Mint Bills has a new business model for billers who want to offer customers mobile bill pay.
We have been following Mint Bills since it was a fast-growing startup named Pageonce, when it rebranded to Check, and when Intuit acquired the company and later rebranded it to Mint Bills. We recently caught up with Steve Schultz, General Manager of the Biller Network for Mint Bills, to discuss how the company is doing with its new identity and expanded support structure, as well as to discuss its new business model for billers.
First off, tell us how things have been going since the acquisition and rebranding last year?

Recently, an acquaintance had a near-meltdown when she couldn’t figure out how to print from her Windows tablet to her Dell printer. On Facebook, she implored friends to help her figure out what she was doing wrong—indicating she needed printouts for work, pronto.
She isn’t alone. Take a look at the user review section of any mobile print app, and you will encounter plenty of comments around printing issues (e.g., app doesn’t work, formatting is incorrect, printer isn’t supported). Indeed, recent InfoTrends research indicated that the top perceived barriers to mobile printing center around technical and compatibility issues.
Assuming you needed to print something from your smartphone or tablet for personal reasons, which would be the largest barriers to doing so?

Last week, Re/code published an article which reported that Google is working on a project called Pony Express to help customers receive and pay their bills within their Gmail accounts. Google declined to comment.

Recent Intuit acquisition Check will now be known as Mint Bills.
When the mobile bill pay company’s acquisition was announced earlier this year, Check co-founder and CEO Guy Goldstein noted that his team looked forward to merging their “talent, mobile mindset and spirit of innovation with Intuit to build products that delight consumers and become a part of their everyday financial lives.” This rebranding helps to publicly solidify that intent to integrate the services.
Intuit has simultaneously used this opportunity to refresh the Mint logo, with each of its products having a subtle difference in the colored line in the leaf to distinguish them from one another. Read more »

Broadridge Financial Solutions and Pitney Bowes announced today that they have formed a joint venture and launched a new technology platform named Inlet. Inlet is being billed as a platform “that will make it easier for companies to distribute statements, bills and other documents to consumers via participating online channels.” Essentially, this means that the approach is to act as a behind the scenes secure digital mail aggregation service that will be made available to businesses seeking expanded online services functionality for their customers.

As part of InfoTrends’ research for clients, we have mapped the steps in the customer decision-making process. Typically, the customer journey includes six main steps: satisfied with current device, trigger event/need recognition, research and fact finding, evaluation of options, purchase, and usage experience.
Upon returning from my maternity leave a few weeks ago, I began wondering how I fit into this model. I received a multifunction printer (MFP) for Christmas that I had selected myself. Finding the best printer online for any particular job can be time consuming and frustrating, from figuring out which places can do what is needed for the job, filling out the form at every printer’s store front, to converting the file so it can be uploaded to the website. Rochester Institute of Technology is in the process of developing Drop2Print to make finding the best print service provider (PSP) for any particular job order simpler. After identifying the major problems that end users and PSPs have; the people at RIT are working on a solution. Drop2Print may appear similar to other digital storefronts, but it’s the published research behind this product that separates it from its competitors. Read more »
