 Nov 1, 2017

The annual PDN PhotoPlus Conference & Expo (PPE) was held October 26-28, 2017 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

PhotoPlus Expo (PPE) draws a sizeable crowd from the surrounding metropolitan area and has become one of the East Coast’s largest photography, filmmaking and digital imaging events. The show highlighted 250 exhibitors and was expected to draw nearly 20,000- attendees. Canon, Nikon and Sony once again were PPE show floor anchors, as they were the vendors closest to the main floor entrance, and occupied the largest exposition real estate. Although this is one of the biggest photography events on the East Coast, there were no new cameras introductions during the expo but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot to do and see on the show floor. Excerpt from Digital Imaging Reporter’s State of the Industry 2017

In the 1990s, digital cameras kicked off the second wave: digital photography. Smartphones were introduced in the late 2000s, marking the third wave: mobile imaging.

Always-connected smartphones and social networks have changed how people take and share photos and videos. Mobile imaging is led by companies with no background in photography, such as Apple, Samsung, Facebook, Instagram and Snap.

logos2What’s the News?

Huawei and Leica Camera AG announced that they have entered into a strategic partnership to reinvent smartphone photography. The companies used some very interesting and rather untraditional wording in their press releases; embracing a more holistic sound and approach. Huawei’s press release spoke about combining a shared ethos in a long-term commitment to the art of craftsmanship, meticulous engineering, and the spirit of winning collaboration to create a powerhouse that will reinvent smartphone photography. These are no small promises, particularly since neither of these companies are household names in the United States! That said, the companies are major players in their respective markets and geographies. Read more »

 Dec 23, 2015

FAAYou get a drone for Christmas and you want to fly it outdoors right away. Stop!

Before you do, you need to register with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or face the threat of severe penalties. Effective December 21, anyone who owns a small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS), also known as a drone, must register with the FAA before they can fly it outdoors. Those who do not register could face civil and criminal penalties. This is all being mandated under the guise of public safety. Registration is free for the first 30 days through a rebate, then $5 after that. Registration is valid for three years. To learn more about the registration process, go to the FAA sUAS registration site. According to the FAA, it expects over 800,000 drones to be sold during this holiday season. Let’s hope the website can handle the impending volume.

Yesterday was first day of April, April Fool’s Day on the calendar, I was reminded that it is also my twelfth year with InfoTrends. In 12 years watching the photography and mobile imaging markets has turned me into a mobile imaging enthusiast. To celebrate my 12 year journey I decided to take a walk down my camera phone memory lane.

B.C. (Before camera phone)

In 2003, people had not even thought of a camera phone. Many people had already had their first car phone by the early 2000s most of those would hardly be categorized as “mobile” Read more »

WPPI Show Going Strong

David Haueter
 Mar 20, 2015

It seems like every day, we see a new story or statistics about the smartphone decimating the camera market or pro photographers getting laid off from publications or news organizations. So, as a photographer it’s very encouraging to attend a show like WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) and be around vendors and other attendees who are excited about the future of the photo market. WPPI is targeted at wedding and portrait photographers, of course, but also draws photographers that specialize in many other areas, such as fine art, advertising/commercial, and nature & wildlife photography.

WPPI is held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas
