After spending my Sunday afternoon looking through shoeboxes of photos, I realise that I have more printed photos of my childhood than I do of my adulthood. I have endless family albums and envelopes filled with memories of my younger years. The fact that my old family photos are only available as prints makes me cherish them even more. The sentimental feelings I get holding these photos in my hands I don’t feel when I look at photos I have stored electronically.

Flickr’s Terabyte of Free Storage a Game-Changer

A quest to return lost memories

One day, during my second year at university, as I was storing away some boxes in the cupboard under the stairs I came across an old grey box wedged in a neat crack in between two steps. The box was covered in what looked like years’ worth of dust. Inside the box was filled with personal photos, certificates and letters. So many wonderful memories just stashed away and unintentionally forgotten about. There were many letters from family, friends, pen pals and girlfriends all addressed to a Scott Goodfellow. With almost every letter there was a photo. Amongst the letters there were endless photos of Scott and his family. I remember many of them clearly; Scott as a baby in the garden with his mum. Another of Scott sat beside his Nan. Several of Scott lined up next to his football team. I couldn’t bring myself to just tuck the memories back under the stairs, so I made it my mission to return the box to Scott. Read more »

Is it time to just call it “photography” again?

It has been more than 35 years since Kodak engineer Steve Sasson built what is widely regarded as the first digital camera, and nearly 18 years since Apple introduced the Kodak-built QuickTake 100, the first sub-$1,000 digital camera. For several years, it was important to note which cameras were digital and which prints were made from an image captured by a “digital camera,” often to explain away any image quality differences versus “real cameras” that still used film.

Much has changed since then. Film is but a distant memory for nearly everyone — except those who don’t remember it at all. Digital cameras are real cameras and digital photos are real photos, but for some reason the industry (InfoTrends included) continues to use the terms “digital camera” and “digital photography,” as if to differentiate them from something with which they would be easily confused. Russia: The Digital Photography Consumer Study

The Russian digital photography market which was once dominated by early adopters and hobbyists is becoming a mainstream market. Many of today’s Russian digital camera owners describe themselves as mainstream adopters of technology and family memory keepers or casual photographers. As market maturation is inevitable, it typically brings with it a decline in photo activity. InfoTrends research has found that the percentage of Russian respondents who report using their digital camera once a week or more often has declined steadily over the years. Additionally the number of photos taken declined gradually between 2009 and 2011 and appears to have settled in 2012.

A major theme for 2013 is “Change is coming.” This was discussed at InfoTrends’ Digital Imaging Conference in Tokyo Japan on December 5th. The challenge posed to conference attendees and the imaging industry was “Are you prepared?”

A new era in imaging is emerging. As a result, InfoTrends expects that there will be tremendous changes in the coming years in how consumers interact with and use their photos and videos. These changes will affect all aspects of the market, including products, consumer behaviors, services, and the vendors.

Photo Plus 2012 – The “Go To” Event for the East Coast

The annual PDN PhotoPlus Conference & Expo (PPE) was held October 24-27, 2012 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. Since, several of the leading companies in the photo industry have U.S. headquarters in the New York metropolitan area, the PhotoPlus Expo is a great “home show” for many industry insiders. PPE draws a healthy contingent from the surrounding metropolitan region and has become a “go to” event. The show drew nearly 24,000 attendees and 250+ exhibitors filled the exhibit hall floor.

There, the product scope and promotional offers are focused predominantly on photo books, calendars, and greeting cards.
