 Nov 1, 2017

The annual PDN PhotoPlus Conference & Expo (PPE) was held October 26-28, 2017 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

PhotoPlus Expo (PPE) draws a sizeable crowd from the surrounding metropolitan area and has become one of the East Coast’s largest photography, filmmaking and digital imaging events. The show highlighted 250 exhibitors and was expected to draw nearly 20,000- attendees. Canon, Nikon and Sony once again were PPE show floor anchors, as they were the vendors closest to the main floor entrance, and occupied the largest exposition real estate. Although this is one of the biggest photography events on the East Coast, there were no new cameras introductions during the expo but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot to do and see on the show floor.  Dec 6, 2016

IlovecamerasFor the last several years we have done a year-end round up of the cameras that were introduced. It’s always an interesting exercise to take a look back on what features and technologies vendors have chosen to feature in their products.

57 models were introduced between January and December of 2016. Although 57 models is a respectable number, it is a marked drop compared to the 72 models introduced in 2015 and significantly fewer than 2014 when 98 models hit the U.S. market. (Source: InfoTrends U.S. Camera Model Tracker**). Although there were fewer models released this year, there is no shortage of cameras for those looking to buy or upgrade.

We have broken out the introductions by popular features and functions, including Wi-Fi connectivity and mirrorless. Read more »

There were some BIG ticket items on people’s gadget wish lists during 2014 – from gaming systems, hybrid laptop tablets, and flat screen TVs. Another one of the most popular gadgets people want are digital cameras (aka Phoneless Cameras).

Although there were many new camera models introduced in 2014, there were far fewer than in previous years. In 2014, there were 98 camera models introduced compared to 127 in 2013 and 146 in 2012 (Source: InfoTrends U.S. Camera Model Tracker). It is expected that the number of cameras introduced will continue to drop by anywhere between 10% to 20% in 2015.

Some Camera Shopping Advice for Friends (and Santa)

 Dec 13, 2013

The lead up to the Holiday gift giving season is always a busy time as people start making out their gift giving lists or their own wish list for Santa. Being an analyst that tracks camera phones and digital cameras, this is also a busy time of year for me as I start getting emails, phone calls and text messages from friends asking me for camera buying advice. Since Thanksgiving I have already received many emails and texts from friends saying they need an opinion about what type of camera to buy.

I will admit I like being the one my friends and relatives turn to for an educated opinion about cameras. That role also carries some pressure with it, given the hundreds of camera models that can be found for sale from an online retailer or traditional brick and mortar stores. So as I prepare for the “what is the best camera to buy?” question I thought some of my ponderings would be helpful for others looking to answer the very same question.

What’s Next After Connected Cameras

Ed Lee
 Jul 3, 2013

Digital camera vendors are finally adding Wi-Fi technology to still cameras in meaningful quantities, and InfoTrends believes that connectivity is finally here to stay. As a proof point, in the first half of 2013, one-third of new cameras announced offer Wi-Fi connectivity as a feature. This is an increase from less than 15% in 2012. More choices will lead to more sales of Wi-Fi enabled cameras. Read more »

This year’s International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicked off in Las Vegas on Monday with the press day. CES sets the scene for the technology year ahead. 2012 offered a bumpy ride for many tech companies. Japanese companies in particular felt the squeeze of the strong yen, the China-Japan dispute, restructuring costs and the competitiveness of companies such as Samsung and LG from Korea. This year CES will be the platform to deliver positive messages to shareholders that their plans for the year ahead will turn around their fortunes. Read more »

 Sep 23, 2011

Last fall, just before the Photokina trade show in Cologne, Germany, it was rumored that Nikon would announce what some thought would be its entrance into the compact interchangeable lens camera (CILC) market. But, Photokina came and went without an announcement. Now, exactly one year later, the rumors that grew in intensity over the last few months have become a reality.
