Epson entering the light production arena

On February the 3rd Epson launched two new colour inkjet MFPs: the LX-10000 (with a 100 ppm speed) and the LX-7000 (with a 75 ppm speed). The launch is interesting from several points of view. It is the first venture of a major inkjet office device vendor into the 100 ppm colour speed class. It also demonstrates Epson’s strategy to replace toner with inkjet in high end office printing. The most significant announcement is however that Epson plans to target the device not only at office, but also at the light production market. Epson does have a foot-hold in production print via its label printers (SurePress Series) and some large format printers are used for poster or proofing as well, but so far has not targeted the mainstream production print market yet. The Inkjet Revival

Placements of inkjet printing devices for consumer and office use were positive in Western Europe in 2014. After years of downward spiraling, the 3.5% YOY growth in 2014 to 14.6 million devices provide a welcome break for the industry players. At a country level, the highest placements increase by country was in the Netherlands with 21% YOY increase. The UK, traditionally a strong country for inkjet technology, also experienced strong growth of 11.6% YOY likely linked to a stable economic situation. HP’s new enterprise ink series offers multiple cost advantages

One of the most compelling aspects of HP’s new enterprise inkjet printer series is the devices’ pricing, running costs, and total cost of ownership. The Officejet Enterprise X page-wide series offers significant cost savings compared to color lasers with similar features and functionality. This is particularly important, given that cost concerns play a key role in customer decision making. This post looks at the benefits of the series from a pricing, cost per page, and total cost of ownership perspective.

Pricing

The new single function printers are priced at $749 and $1,199 (base models), while the MFPs range in price from $1,999 to $2,799 (base models). These are very attractive price points given the devices’ fast speeds, robust engines, networking capabilities, and other business-level features.

HP’s enterprise ink series: positioning & key features

HP is targeting its new page-wide business inkjet series towards the “enterprise,” which the company defines as “large” organizations with solutions needs around manageability, security, extensibility, etc. In addition, HP suggests the devices are intended for groups of 5 to 15 users who print up to 6,000 pages per month.

Positioning of new HP Officejet Enterprise X series

The new Officejet Enterprise X line incorporates features and functionality that go beyond the capabilities of the Officejet Pro X series, including more robust scanning, embedded OCR, a pull-out keyboard, a larger touchscreen, customizable job shortcuts, full solutions capability, and a secure hard disk. It is clear these features were included with the needs of larger businesses in mind.

However, the positioning of these devices as “enterprise” is likely something that is going to prove subjective, especially as the definition of “enterprise” often varies from one vendor to another. Read more »

HP Introduces its First Page-Wide Desktop Inkjet Product

On October 30th, Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced the upcoming availability of its first desktop page-wide inkjet devices–the HP Officejet Pro X series–as well as a new line of laser workflow multifunctional peripherals (MFPs) and associated solutions. All of the products are targeted toward the business market. From a hardware and supplies perspective, we believe the development in page-wide technology (officially known as HP’s “PageWide Technology”) has the most potential to create disruption within this market. The office market has traditionally been dominated by laser-based technology, but the introduction of page-wide inkjet devices with robust speed, print quality, and paper handling capabilities from a market leader like HP could really change how customers view inkjet technology.
