liveBooks expands into output with acquisition of Pinhole Pro & Pinhole Press

liveBooks, a leader in providing web services (websites, blog solutions, mobile sites, etc.) to professional photographers for years, has made a major change in their product portfolio by acquiring Pinhole Pro and Pinhole Press from Mohawk. The acquisition will give liveBooks pro photographer clients the option of offering high-quality output to their customers and will allow liveBooks to compete more directly with companies like Mpix and SmugMug (among others) that offer both portfolio and output services.

Facebook Announces Agreement to Buy Instagram

Facebook will be making the largest acquisition in its history when it acquires the incredibly popular Instagram photo app, a deal which was announced on Monday and should be completed in this quarter. Facebook has agreed to pay approximately $1 billion in cash and stock for Instagram, which has gained around 30 million users since it launched in January 2011. Instagram doesn’t have any significant sources of revenue, but reportedly closed a deal for $50 million in funding just last week (at a $500 million valuation — hello instant payoff!). Facebook will also acquire Instagram’s entire team of employees in the deal, which only consists of around a dozen people in the San Francisco area. Read more »

Online photo sharing breaks into everyday LIFE

Reading a Photo District News (PDN) news feed yesterday morning, I saw that LIFE Magazine images will be available for public search and viewing on Google Images. Back in September, LIFE partnered with Getty Images to breathe (forgive the term) new life into the LIFE.com brand.

The new service went public this week with an estimated 2 million images. LIFE’s full historic archive of nearly 10 million images, many previously unpublished, is expected to be online by February 2009. The ability to search is being brought about through a revenue share agreement between the companies. Not to worry, Getty won’t lose money; the free sharing is for personal use rather than commercial use.
