These innovators and the providers they represent are helping the market evolve from basic print procurement to a more comprehensive marketing supply chain management solution. Though it manages more than $100 million of print for its clients in North America alone, Arvato may not be familiar to many outside Europe. Arvato is a white label provider of call center support, financial and IT solutions, as well as print and supply chain management. As part of an initiative to broaden its print management presence in North America, the German firm recently re-located Stephan Hackert, Vice President of Business Development in North America, to San Francisco.

In North America, A4 laser MFPs drive office equipment growth in 2013

Overall, the North America office equipment market continued to decline in total unit shipments in 2013. Total unit shipments of all office single function printers and MFPs declined 5.9% year over year; this figure includes all technologies — laser and inkjet. Once again, HP held the number one market share position in 2013 with 54.7% share. This was followed by Canon with 17.1% and Epson with 11.8% share.

Tag Relaunch Adds Williams Lea Marketing Solutions

Creative services has been a focal point of expansion for document outsourcing providers in recent years, with Williams Lea making the most significant play in 2011. That July, Williams Lea acquired marketing execution and production agency Tag, which delivers marketing communications through a process called “smart centralization” designed to help brands maintain marketing consistency across markets and media. Tag recently relaunched with a full brand refresh, new logo, website redesign, and the integration of the Williams Lea Marketing Solutions team. In addition to these changes, John Paulson has been promoted from CEO for the Americas region to Global CEO of Tag. Peter Zillig and Todd Handcock will work closely with Paulson and continue in their roles as Tag CEO for EMEA and Asia Pacific, respectively, with full operational responsibility for the business and its clients across their regions.

Weak economy continues to impact North America office equipment market in 2012

Overall, slow economic growth in both the U.S. and Canada continued to impact the North America office equipment market in 2012. Total unit shipments of all office single function printers and MFPs declined 10.6% year over year; this figure includes all technologies: laser, inkjet, and impact. Once again, HP held the number one market share position in 2012 with 50.1% of the market. This was followed by Canon (14.8%) and Epson (10.4%).

Transaction Printers Are the Leading Adopters of High-Speed Continuous-Feed Process Color Digital

Who is buying high-speed continuous-feed process color printers? Early evidence indicates that it’s transaction printers. About 200 print engines in this class were placed around the world in 2009 but it hasn’t been entirely clear which environments have been most likely to buy them. It was my assumption that the quality and running cost capabilities of these devices made them attractive to transaction, direct mail, and some publication environments but I wondered whether that was really the case.
