Mobile World Congress 2015 – Photography Featured Prominently in New Smartphones

The 2015 Mobile World Congress was held the first week of March in Barcelona Spain. The show is hosted by The Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) which is an association of mobile operators and related companies devoted to supporting the standardization, deployment and promotion of the GSM mobile telephone system. During this trade event there were many new products, services, and accessories introduced with a mobile play (phones, tablets, etc.) and included in those introductions were many new smartphone products. This blog focusses on the smartphones that featured photography prominently.

The digital camera market is in decline. Vendors are cutting back on their product range. Olympus and Fujifilm have announced that they will exit low end compact cameras. Even Canon has hinted following rumours that they will consider what to do with cameras that are priced under ¥20,000. Nikon seems to be the vendor that is planning to stay in for the long run, capturing low hanging sales as competitors exit.

InfoTrends’ forecast shows the trend clearly over the last 10 years. 2014 is shaping up to show continued steep decline. Changes in technology, the emergence of competing devices and perhaps a tendency for camera vendors to believe that the exceptional image quality found in cameras will protect them from competition can all be used to explain the shape of the curve below. 2014 International CES by the Numbers

The International CES in Las Vegas, NV is considered the premier trade show in the consumer electronics (CE) industry. In 2009, the show suffered a dramatic drop in attendance because of the economic crisis in the U.S., but has been steadily climbing back. This year, the weather gods did not cooperate. Frigid weather conditions across the county resulted in massive flight delays and cancelations during the weekend leading up to the show. As a result, many people headed to the show did not make it. Therefore, attendance numbers were likely a bit lower than show organizer the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) predicted.
