Mosaic is a Benchmark for Photo Book Mobile Apps

Smartphones are now the primary camera that most U.S. consumers use on a daily basis and their rise in popularity is having a significant impact on photo output products such as photo prints, photo books, and photo cards. With people taking more pictures with smartphones, they are also creating more printed products with them. In the InfoTrends 2014 U.S. Photo Merchandise End-User Survey, 21% of photo merchandise buyers indicated that they had ordered a photo  product using their mobile device and another 39% said they had not but were interested in doing so.

Mobile Devices Growing in Popularity as Photo Merchandise Creating & Ordering Tools

Smartphones have become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, filling the role of not only a phone, but also a music player, GPS, calculator, calendar, flashlight, voice recorder, clock, camera, and many other functions depending on what apps are installed on it. The camera is one of the most popular functions used on the smartphone and many consumers now use a smartphone as their primary camera. In the InfoTrends 2014 U.S. Photo Merchandise End-User Survey, over 46% of respondents said the smartphone was the type of digital camera used most often, which was more popular than digital point & shoot cameras at just under 33%.

Apple once again held true to its history of a September iPhone introduction. There was much speculation around the impending announcement and Apple delivered by introducing two models on September 11th — the iPhone 5c and the 5s. Although the overall excitement for some seems to be waning that never stops the true Fan Boys; the very day the phones were announced, there was a guy in Tokyo that lined up in front of his local Apple Store and lines continue to form wherever the phones will be available even though they will be available  on September 20th.

Walgreens Goes After the Mobile Print Market

With more consumers using smartphones as everyday cameras, vendors in the photo output market are striving to come up with easier ways to print photos captured on mobile devices. Walgreens is one of the leading retailers in the U.S. market, and has been proactive in going after the mobile photo market. Back in July, they introduced a developer portal that allows third-party software developers to integrate the Walgreens QuickPrints software development kit (SDK) into their apps, which will enable photo printing directly from iOS and Android mobile devices. The QuickPrints SDK is already implemented into seven partner apps, and is the first time that Walgreens has provided an open interface for developers to integrate their in-store services.

The future of photo publishing and merchandise looks bright. This year, InfoTrends conducted a number of in-depth studies that leads us to believe that the photo merchandise market will experience a bump in the number of consumers making photo merchandise purchases in the coming years. Part of this growth is going to come from the convergence of smartphone camera adoption, advancements in camera phone imaging, and the development of photo creation apps for the mobile phone.

In 2010, according to the U.S. Census, there were over 73.2 million people that fit into the age demographic of 18-34 years old (22% of the U.S. population). The  2011 InfoTrends U.S. Mobile Imaging End-User Survey highlights that close to 40% of this age demographic has a smartphone, in addition the 2010 InfoTrends U.S. Photo Merchandise End Customer Survey highlights that this age demographic is the largest segment of photo merchandise purchasers (with over 50% having made a photo merchandise purchase in the last 12 months). This combination of a high propensity to purchase photo merchandise combined with a high propensity to own a smartphone creates an atmosphere ready for an upsurge in consumers leveraging their mobile images to create and purchase photo merchandise.

Smartphones Enter the Limelight

First introduced in early 2007, Apple’s wildly popular iPhone is arguably the device that started the smartphone craze in the consumer market. Meanwhile, many in the business world are glued to their “CrackBerries.” Recent research from InfoTrends confirms that smartphone penetration is growing by leaps and bounds, and for good reason–smartphones enable today’s on-the-go consumers to stay connected regardless of their physical location.

In April 2011, InfoTrends conducted its annual end-user survey on mobile imaging. Although this research covers all camera phones, smartphones have really come into their own over the past year. As might be expected, very few respondents reported owning smartphones (which are defined as handsets with Internet access, operating system software, and an embedded camera) during our 2008 research. Today, these devices are popping up everywhere. Between 2010 and 2011, the share of respondents who owned smartphones jumped from 16% to 24%. This represents an amazing year-over-year growth rate of 50%!
