Reaching and communicating with consumers used to be easy, or at least simpler. At one time, 80% of the U.S. population could be reached through three major network television channels. Today, it would take more than 200 television channels to reach that same audience. The prevalence of the Internet and rapid technological advancements (e.g., imaging, mobile, bandwidth, processing speeds) have dramatically changed the communications landscape over the past decade.

The printing industry is in the midst of a rapid evolution. Technology is expanding the number of offline and online media channels that consumers are prompted to engage with. Consumers are changing their behaviors in terms of media and communication, and their preferences are forcing businesses across all industries to make adjustments in how they interact with customers and prospects. Because print is now just one of many media channels that consumers are accessing, the value and role of print is changing.

The National Stationery Show (NSS) marked its 66th anniversary on May 20-23rd. The NSS is one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of stationery and related lifestyle products. The show brought together over 11,000 buyers and 800 exhibiting companies, who were showing greeting cards, invitations, imprintables, giftwrap/ribbons, stationery, party supplies, paper tableware, customized/personalized products, paper-crafting supplies, calendars, and more.

The stationery market is an attractive market for service providers looking to expand their revenue channels. For manufacturers, these print centric products fit well within existing workflows and production infrastructures. For retailers, these products can become complementary to existing products. In March, I wrote about the short window of opportunity retailers of photo merchandise have to market new products and expand their customer base. One of the trends we have seen is a shift from marketing through online media channels, to a blend of marketing using offline AND online media channels. InfoTrends research has shown that there is a multiplier effect on return on investment when marketers increase the number of media channels used in a campaign. The more media channels used, the greater the return on investment. The challenge marketers face is identifying the right mix of media channels AND what marketing message or promotions to use that will capture a customer’s attention and trigger a decision to purchase. Mobile Apps: A Blue Ocean for Photo Merchandise

InfoTrends is now tracking the growing number of apps that support the creation, ordering, printing, and shipment of photo merchandise products. While it is still an early market, a perfect storm is brewing that will lead to rapid growth of the market for these apps. The combination of an increase in the number of consumers who use their smartphones as their primary camera, with the growing number of apps that allow consumers to creatively interact with their images, and with backend API’s that facilitate order, printing, and shipment of items created within the app, is creating revenue opportunities from photo merchandise products.

To date, we’ve identified approximately thirty apps that allow consumers the ability to print simple photo merchandise items (posters and cards primarily).
