Ricoh Acquisition of mindSHIFT – Launch Pad for Services and Sign of Acquisitions to Come

David Ramos
 Jan 24, 2014

Best Buy acquired mindShift in 2011 for $167 million. The strategy at the time was to use mindShift to break into cloud services and target more SMBs.  Best Buy was focused on developing a services business and the thought was that with the combination of mindSHIFT’s cloud, data center and professional services would allow the two companies capture a greater share of the $40 billion small and mid-sized business MSP market. Paul Chisholm, chairman and CEO of mindSHIFT at the time in 2011 stated of the acquisition by Best Buy, “We are very closely aligned with Best Buy in both corporate vision, and in our culture of integrity, customer value and results.”

That was then, this is now, and the current reality for Best Buy is to leverage an asset (mindSHIFT) and go back to doing what made them great and focus on their core.  Bottom line, this is a good/needed move for Best Buy after a disappointing 2013 that was capped off by a holiday price war with Amazon where it lost badly. Toshiba LEAD – The Race to…wait for it…One Billion Dollars!

David Ramos
 Nov 25, 2013

Revenue diversification and revenue growth as a corporate strategy to increase sales from new products and new markets is nothing new. Expanding into a new segment of an industry that a business is already in, or investing in a promising business outside of the scope of the existing business are solid avenues to diversification. What is so unique about Toshiba America Business Solutions is how they get there; with technology creation, innovation and a true brand agnostic approach. Need proof they are serious? 25% of their core MFP product page is HP & Lexmark and almost their entire printer product page is NOT THEIR PRODUCT. This is not the bait and switch of a Global Imaging Systems, where you are assured that yes, you will be able to continue carrying multiple product lines, only to make the non-Xerox line noncompetitive with high internal transfer costs making it difficult if not impossible to recommend products that compete with the core Xerox line. No, this group at Toshiba is different and the independent dealer channel should take notice.

Toshiba LEAD for the second consecutive year struck home a message of “Revenue Beyond Print”. Digital Signage and the Ellumina Digital Signage services along with Virtuoso digital signage displays, and LED signage for outdoor usage was eloquently showcased and created a very positive buzz among the independent dealers, Toshiba direct employees and end user attendees. Highlighted throughout the technology floor and general sessions were applications and content vs. hardware which made it easy for dealers and end users to envision the digital signage market opening as well as key vertical market opportunities were demonstrated.

Document Industry Financial Performance Reflects Real Cost of MPS

Zac Butcher
 Mar 28, 2013

At the end of Q1 each year we review the performance of the main players in the document imaging industry. Unfortunately not all vendors provide clear and transparent financial information for their document business so a few companies are always excluded. The table below shows the operating profits of 10 vendors’ imaging and printing divisions over the last three years. All information has been extracted from publicly available sources and converted to a calendar year view to provide a like-for-like comparison. Therefore, the figures may not correspond exactly with vendor quoted numbers for their own financial years.*

Operating profits down, no mention of MPS

The 2010 to 2012 operating profit trend is clearly down, across the board. The explanations that accompany publication of performance data have not yet started to recognise the impact of managed print services (MPS).

More Services, Fewer Pages – The Xerox (and Industry?) Transition

Jeff Hayes
 Feb 1, 2012

Xerox continues to transform itself into a services company, albeit one with a deep base in print and document-related technology. Xerox now generates the largest share of its revenue (48%) from Services (business process, document process, and IT outsourcing), compared with only 45% for Technology (equipment, supplies, break/fix). For all of 2011, Xerox’ Services business grew 6% while its Technology business contracted by 1%. Read more »

Inspiring Customer Passion: The 2012 Konica Minolta Dealer Event

Jim Hamilton
 Jan 18, 2012

More than 1,000 attendees have been in Las Vegas the past couple of days at the Bellagio hotel for Konica Minolta’s dealer event. This is the third such Konica Minolta event I’ve attended in the past few years. (See previous blogs on the one in Los Angeles in 2010 and Orlando in 2009. This year’s theme is “Inspire Customer Passion” and to bring that message home Konica Minolta presented an engaging mix of corporate presentations, an inspiring keynote by Tony Hsieh (CEO of Zappos and author of the book Delivering Happiness), and evening entertainment by Larry the Cable Guy.

Welcome to Fabulas Las Vegas

Latin America represents one of the largest growth opportunities for office document technology & services. According to data from the IMF and World Bank, GDP is growing 2 to 3 times faster than developed markets creating an environment that is ripe for new products and services.

According to recent end-user data, business confidence is high in Brazil and Argentina. 150 IT decision makers from each region were asked to compare their confidence in their business prospects over the next 12 months with the previous 12 months.
