Highcon Ramps Up: Lots to Show at drupa 2016

Highcon, the digital finishing system supplier, recently held a three day event at its headquarters in Israel to show technology developments that it will soon unveil at drupa 2016 in Germany. The short version of our report on this “pre-drupa” gathering:

  • Since its debut at drupa 2012, Highcon has placed 25 of its “Euclid”  and “Euclid II” devices globally
  • In 2016 it will add a new portfolio of digital cutting and creasing systems and related tools, the Highcon Beam, Highcon Euclid III and the Highcon Pulse.
  • These products will give carton converters and other printers new access to Highcon’s unique finishing, and also to two applications new at Highcon, 3D printing and variable data cutting.

Label Expo Preview: What to Look for in Brussels Next Week

Label Expo, the premier tradeshow for the label industry, will take place September 29 to October 2 in Brussels. Now decades old, this is the show that never seems to fade, and also one where the role of digital printing technologies always seems to grow. InfoTrends will attend and make a detailed report about it to clients but for now we offer a quick preview of what we expect to see:

A huge HP booth: The stand’s core equipment will be HP Indigo WS6800 (labels and other applications) and 20000 (a 30” web, for flexible packaging and for labels also), but there will be many other products. Ones particular to HP Indigo presses will include a white ink specifically for shrink sleeves and new yellow and magenta inks with enhanced lightfastness, also software upgrades, including a VDP tool for Adobe Illustrator, within HP SmartStream Designer prepress. In North America, A4 laser MFPs drive office equipment growth in 2013

Overall, the North America office equipment market continued to decline in total unit shipments in 2013. Total unit shipments of all office single function printers and MFPs declined 5.9% year over year; this figure includes all technologies — laser and inkjet. Once again, HP held the number one market share position in 2013 with 54.7% share. This was followed by Canon with 17.1% and Epson with 11.8% share.

How do customers make purchase decisions?

As part of InfoTrends’ research for clients, we have mapped the steps in the customer decision-making process. Typically, the customer journey includes six main steps: satisfied with current device, trigger event/need recognition, research and fact finding, evaluation of options, purchase, and usage experience.

Upon returning from my maternity leave a few weeks ago, I began wondering how I fit into this model. I received a multifunction printer (MFP) for Christmas that I had selected myself. As it turns out, my decision-making process aligns with the steps outlined above. I will discuss my experience below, followed by some questions print device vendors may like to consider. Placements of Western European Office Devices Continue to Suffer

The Western European1 office equipment market continued to contract in 2012, driven by a weak economy, device consolidation through managed print services and new competition from business inkjet . Placements of single function and multifunction laser printers in office environments (1-69 ppm) declined 8.1% year over year whilst placements of business inkjet devices increased 3.3%. The majority of the decline in laser devices was in single function printers, where placements dropped 16% year over year. The market continues to shift from single function to multifunction devices, and from monochrome to colour engines.

Heidelberg Buys CSAT, a Top Digital Print Tech Supplier to Pharma

Press manufacturer Heidelberg Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) announced on July 29 that it acquired CSAT GmbH, based near Karlsruhe, Germany, for an undisclosed price. Heidelberg is one of the world’s top makers of conventional presses; it is also a supplier of related technology such as workflow software and, through its young Linoprint subsidiary, drop on demand color inkjet presses for label printing. CSAT is a much smaller company, and one that manufactures both electrophotographic and inkjet presses for labels and packaging, mainly for use in the pharmaceuticals industry. Read more »

Clover and West Point Products: A Major Development in the Supplies Industry

The supplies industry has a new player and it comes ready to play and invest, Golden Gate Capital. On April 14, 2010, Golden Gate Capital, a private equity investment firm based in San Francisco (which makes sense given their name), announced the acquisitions of Clover Technologies Group and West Point Products. This news could be arguably viewed as combining the largest and second largest aftermarket players in the supplies industry. Golden Gate has approximately $8 billion of capital under management and plans to become a perpetual fund for these two major supplies companies. Now with the backing of Golden Gate, potential opportunities include investing in research and development, new products, and more acquisitions domestically and globally. We have been told that Golden Gate does not plan to buy these two companies and then sell in a few years as sometimes happens in these situations.
