Leading with Workflow – Canon-Océ Commercial Printing Business Days

Ralf Schlozer
 May 12, 2015

The importance of workflow and the matching software ecosystem has been frequently publicised and although not every user might have realised it yet, all production printing hardware vendors are strengthening their offerings in workflow and solutions nowadays. The importance of workflow is however in stark contrast with the lack of approaches in making the benefits of workflow visible in an exhibition or open house environment. Software remains intangible and while the benefit of some features can be calculated in time and money, for other features like customer satisfaction, error reduction, new services offerings and overall process efficiency calculating the exact value for a single business case is much harder.

Canon-Océ already organised several Commercial Printing Business Days, but for the event that took place in April 2015 the software portfolio was targeted to take centre stage. Presentations, workshops and customer testimonials focussed on workflow solutions. Canon-Océ invited users and prospects with interest in workflow solutions and had a total attendance of 550 visitors from around the globe at the three days of the event.

HP Flexes Its Packaging Muscles: Part 1

 Nov 24, 2014

HP’s Graphic Arts division demonstrated its ongoing commitment to the future of digital printing for packaging applications by announcing a partnership with Kama, a major manufacturer of finishing automation.. The announcement came a part of a recent open house that Kama held at its Dresden, Germany headquarters; also at that event, Kama, a 120-year-old manufacturer of automatic die cutters, hot foil stamping systems, and folder-gluers, revealed its collaboration with HP Indigo to launch a prototype of the FlexFold 52, a folder-gluer that will become commercially available in Q2 2015. During his introduction, Kama CEO Marcus Tralau proclaimed that “packaging is coming home” to Germany with this new technology introduction.

The FlexFold 52 offers automatic setup for rapid changeovers from one job to the next, making it ideal for producing short runs of folding cartons. Setup is handled via JDF and JMF commands, and the device can automatically adjust the length and width of the folding elements before gluing them together at a speed of 200 meters per minute with nearly whisper-quiet operation. Developed in collaboration with HP Indigo’s team, the system complements the capabilities of the HP Indigo 30000 printing system when producing folding carton applications.

 Jun 6, 2013

A common theme that InfoTrends has been noticing among print service providers, for the past few years, has been centralized around finishing. Specifically the desire for printers to create fully automated end-to-end production workflows. In our annual U.S. Production Software Investment Outlook, we found that 23.5% of respondents have set improving finishing automation as an important priority for the 2013 year. Improving finishing automation is important because of the opportunity available for printers to reduce costs through improving production turnaround times, reducing dependency for manual labor, and removing human errors.

Automation a Key Theme at Graph Expo

 Nov 7, 2008

While I may not have seen everything I wanted to while on the show floor at Graph Expo this year, there is one reccurring theme that I heard about from print service providers and saw from vendors: the need for automation. This theme is emerging at a very crucial time in our industry, especially considering the current economic climate and the increasing need for printers to reduce costs, increase turnaround time, and still add value to the print-related services and other services that they are offering.
