Having drupa Every Three Years Is a Bad Idea

A recent PrintWeek article reveals that Messe Dusseldorf, the organizers of the drupa trade show, are proposing a change in the frequency of the show from once every four years to once every three years. This is a bad idea. Perhaps to offset the proposed more frequent occurrence of drupa, Messe Dusseldorf is also recommending that the length of the show be reduced from fourteen to eleven days. This is a good idea.

Exhibitors have been asking for a shorter show, not a more frequent one. The most obvious benefit of going to a three-year cycle is not for exhibitors, but for the drupa organizers. Over a 12-year period the math works out like this: four 11-day drupas on a three-year cycle equals 44 days. Three 14-day drupas works out to 42 days. In the end there are more days on the show floor with the new proposal.

Heidelberg’s wide-format and wider evolution

This week Heidelberg extended its deal to sell EFI Vutek wide-format digital presses to Canada, having begun the alliance in the USA in January.

Under the deal Heidelberg is responsible for sales, distribution, installation, training and support of EFI Vutek’s GS2000, GS 3200 and GS5000r machines. Heidelberg will distribute inks, parts, consumables, accessories and upgrades for the printers.

In EFI’s press release about the Canadian deal it is interesting that the inks will be sold under Heidelberg’s own Saphira brand rather than EFI Vutek’s brand, which fits with the German offset giant’s strategy of increasing its revenues from supplies and services. Read more »

Heidelberg Puts Off Digital Print Partnership Decision(s) Until 2011

The German web site print.de reported today that Heidelberg will not make any decisions about digital print partnerships until early 2011. The news came during a presentation to European print industry magazine editors. Back in May at its IPEX press conference Heidelberg had said that it was searching for digital print partners (emphasis on the plural) and would make some decisions before year’s end. We’ve been waiting since then. Graph Expo passed. What a great opportunity to gain the spotlight even though Heidelberg didn’t have a booth there! Then early in December Océ and manroland announced a partnership, and still there was no news from Heidelberg. We’d been hoping for a Christmas news release, but that will have to wait. And it may be a bit of a wait. print.de reports that a likely time for the announcement could be the Digimedia show in April in Dusseldorf. Read more »

On the Eve of Graph Expo 2010

Here are some thoughts leading into Graph Expo 2010:

  • Digital is mainstream — Look at the exhibitors across the front of the Graph Expo show floor. This is real estate that had been held for years by Heidelberg. Now it’s (from left to right): Xerox, HP, EFI, Presstek, xpedx, and Pitney Bowes. Heidelberg, the largest exhibitor for many years, does not have a booth at the show. Komori, another press manufacturer with a long history of participation at Graph Expo, is not exhibiting either. The landscape has changed and digital has become mainstream at Graph Expo.
  • Inkjet, inkjet, inkjet — The digital print market is represented mostly by toner-based electrophotographic devices today. They produce by far the majority of production digital print output. Yet in five or ten years that equation could be turned on its head by high-speed continuous feed color inkjet products capable of printing high volumes on a range of uncoated and coated paper types. Graph Expo 2010 will be a turning point in the use of coated paper on these devices. Economical coated paper that works on this class of products will open up new application areas and drive high volumes of print. Label & packaging applications using inkjet are also a new growth area.
  • Larger format cut-sheet — The B2-format inkjet products from Fujifilm and Screen grabbed a lot of attention at IPEX. So did Presstek’s announcement of its 75DI (which can handle 6-up letter). Leading into the show Kodak and Xerox made announcements about increased formats for top-of the line NexPress and iGen4 products. These announcements have important implications for productivity, of course, but perhaps more importantly for the types of print applications that will fit within the print area. Think about multi-up small document applications like business cards and post cards as well as applications where every inch counts such as folding cartons.
  • New cut-sheet color products — 2010 has been a strong year for new cut-sheet color products with announcements from Canon, HP Indigo, Konica Minolta, Ricoh, and Xerox. The range of choice for cut-sheet color devices faster than 70 pages per minute (ppm) has expanded. In addition, offerings in the 50 to 70 ppm range are also coming on line. Keep an eye out for how these devices are being leveraged with new workflow, front-end, and finishing tools.
  • Effects beyond CMYK — There are a growing number of products that have new or added features that differentiate them from their competitors. These include expanded CMYK color gamut, fifth colors, and gloss coating. Taking advantage of these features to their fullest is a challenge since they require software tools and education to be used to their fullest. Look beyond the hardware to see what these vendors are doing to make these effects easy to employ.

Kodak Will Show the 5000XL at Graph Expo (and Other Prosper News)

I found out this week that Kodak has decided to bring the Prosper 5000XL to Graph Expo (October 3-6, Chicago). This will mirror what Kodak did at IPEX and will represent the first showing of the device in North America. It’s good news and for those who haven’t committed to attending, it provides another reason to come to the show. There’s more about Prosper in the news as well. You should have a look at Eric Owen’s blog in Output Links for some insight on Prosper, but here’s a quick take on the recent developments:

  • There are now two Prosper system installations — Kodak customers Offset Paperback Manufacturers (Laflin, Pennsylvania) and SAGIM (a French print service provider using the system for books) represent the first two installed beta sites of Prosper standalone systems (other companies have Prosper S10 Imprinting Systems running in conjunction with traditional printing presses). Both have the Prosper 1000 (the monochrome version of Prosper). Kodak reports that Offset Paperback Manufacturers (OPM) will be the first site to get the process color Prosper 5000XL and that the device is being installed now. Kodak said that in the past month OPM has been produced salable books at a volume of up to 1.7 million book pages (approximately 3,850 books) per day on its Prosper 1000.
  • The first Prosper 1000 placement in Australasia — SOS Print and Media Group in Sydney, Australia will be installing a Prosper 1000 for book printing in November. This is the first Prosper 1000/5000XL announcement in Australasia (there have been S5/S10 Imprinting System announcements, for example, in China). SOS says that it will consider upgrading the device to the full-color 5000XL version. Read more »

How to Avoid Having a Lousy Press Event

Two recent trade shows, ON DEMAND and IPEX, are now behind us and as a printing industry market analyst I have been exposed to a lot of pre-show briefings and press conferences over the past couple of months (not to mention literally hundreds of such events over many years). Some have been good, but a surprising number have been terrible. Here are some of the major issues I’ve seen along with some suggestions for how they could be improved:

  • Too short/too little information — I’ve been in on two recent press events where the presenters rushed through a 10 minute presentation, glossing over key details of some very big announcements, and then opened up for questions & answers. Remedy: If you are going to all of the effort of inviting press and analysts to this type of event, whether in person or on a conference call, you’ve got a captive audience. Take advantage of it! Journalists and analysts expect to sit for half an hour at least. Use the time well.

Neryos Previews a 300-ppm, A3-Format, Cut-Sheet, Color Inkjet Printer

A new A3-format color inkjet printer was unveiled at IPEX by a French company called Neryos. I didn’t hear about it until I was back in the United States, so I made a point of setting up a call with Dominique Martin, the Neryos CEO, to talk about the IPN75, which the company boldly described in an IPEX preview showing as the “most productive sheet-fed colour inkjet printer ever.” The product is interesting in part because it shows how a company with systems integration experience can leverage a modular component like an inkjet head into a high-speed production color system.

Attendance at IPEX

There is no question that IPEX attendance was hurt by the travel problems associated with the Icelandic volcano. The real question is “How many people chose not to come because of it?” 5%? 10%? 25%? We’ll never know, but it definitely had a significant impact. Many people were delayed and many cancelled their trips entirely. And yet, it could have been much, much worse. The travel blackouts only lasted for a relatively small block of time. If it had been for three or four days the impact would have been devastating. With economic concerns still looming, particularly in the European Union with the Greek crisis, the last thing a trade show of the scale of IPEX needed was travel disruption brought on by an act of God. It makes exhibitors even more nervous than they already are about the money they invest in trade shows.

HP Expands Wide Format Lines at IPEX

Bitstream to Acquire Assets of Press-sense

Yesterday, Bitstream, the developer of the Pageflex solutions suite announced it has agreed to acquire all of Press-sense’s assets for $6.5 million in cash.

For those of you that are not familiar with Bitstream, the company develops and sells a range of software technology including fonts, variable data publishing, Web-to-print, and more recently mobile Web browsers. The company, headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts, has been around since the early 1980s and has been public since 1996. Last fiscal year, Bitstream reported revenue of $21 million.
