Observations from Day 2 of the HP T400 Inkjet Web Press Launch Event

As a follow-up to Wednesday’s blog, here are some observations collected over the two days of this event:

Announcements: Three major announcements came out of this event: (1) HP’s T400 Inkjet Web press (for more on this, see the InfoTrends white paper), (2) Pitney Bowes simultaneous announcement of the IntelliJet 20, and (3) HP’s partnership with Compart for an AFP solution for the Inkjet Web Press.

It’s not a document until it’s finished: ONeil’s T300 was in their main production area along with offset presses, monochrome roll-fed digital printers, Indigos, paper storage, binding & finishing, and mail lines. The most illuminating part about the tour of this facility was the extent and sophistication of O’Neil’s various binding, finishing, insertion, and mail operations. It becomes obvious how critical these functions are to O’Neil and its clients. O’Neil has found that a roll-to-roll workflow is best for them given the range of finishing requirements (perfect bound, saddle-stitch, and transactional mail)

More than seven million impressions in a day: O’Neil said that they had one day (3-shifts, 24 hours) in which they printed 7,619,883 impressions on their Inkjet Web Presses. This was on multiple 20-inch webs and they calculated that this was at 80% uptime). Note: 7,619,883 impressions over 24 hours equates to 5,292 impressions per minute.

The heads are lasting a long time: After a year of operating their T300, 71 of the individual heads were still in the unit and operational. This is about 50% of the total number of heads. After a year and a half of operation there were 44 original heads left, and there were 41 left after a year and three quarters. Read more »

Pitney Bowes Customer Summit

Pitney Bowes’ Document Messaging Technologies group held their 2010 Customer Summit this week in Danbury, Connecticut. The event was attended by approximately 180 people from 12 countries including many of the largest corporate mail centers, data center service bureaus, and direct mail printers. Two of the most significant items were:

  • White Paper Factory demo of the HP IntelliJet press and the new PB Print+Messenger system
  • Announcement of PB’s TransPromo marketplace service which may finally help realize the potential of using bills and statements as a viable marketing channel

Enabling the White Paper Factory

Pitney Bowes pointed out that transaction print and mail are often co-located, but uncoupled manufacturing functions supporting legacy systems applications. PB’s focus is to link print AND mail operations into an integrated workflow that enables significant productivity improvements and new revenue streams. PB is pushing the idea of a White Paper Factory that does not require any pre-printing or storage of shells, forms, or envelopes by using the IntelliJet printer and Print+Messenger system.

Kodak Will Show the 5000XL at Graph Expo (and Other Prosper News)

I found out this week that Kodak has decided to bring the Prosper 5000XL to Graph Expo (October 3-6, Chicago). This will mirror what Kodak did at IPEX and will represent the first showing of the device in North America. It’s good news and for those who haven’t committed to attending, it provides another reason to come to the show. There’s more about Prosper in the news as well. You should have a look at Eric Owen’s blog in Output Links for some insight on Prosper, but here’s a quick take on the recent developments:

  • There are now two Prosper system installations — Kodak customers Offset Paperback Manufacturers (Laflin, Pennsylvania) and SAGIM (a French print service provider using the system for books) represent the first two installed beta sites of Prosper standalone systems (other companies have Prosper S10 Imprinting Systems running in conjunction with traditional printing presses). Both have the Prosper 1000 (the monochrome version of Prosper). Kodak reports that Offset Paperback Manufacturers (OPM) will be the first site to get the process color Prosper 5000XL and that the device is being installed now. Kodak said that in the past month OPM has been produced salable books at a volume of up to 1.7 million book pages (approximately 3,850 books) per day on its Prosper 1000.
  • The first Prosper 1000 placement in Australasia — SOS Print and Media Group in Sydney, Australia will be installing a Prosper 1000 for book printing in November. This is the first Prosper 1000/5000XL announcement in Australasia (there have been S5/S10 Imprinting System announcements, for example, in China). SOS says that it will consider upgrading the device to the full-color 5000XL version. Read more »

ComColor Options and Partnerships Reveal RISO’s Production Market Strategy

A series of announcements over the past year from RISO and its partners underscore a sales and marketing strategy that RISO is using to focus its ComColor line of color inkjet printers on production environments. (Note: InfoTrends clients can refer to the analysis entitled “RISO Accelerates Color Cut-Sheet Inkjet to 150-ipm with Its New ComColor Line” dated June 17, 2009” for more background details on ComColor.) While ComColor has some opportunities in office multi-function peripheral (MFP) markets, what RISO has discovered is that with the right accessories and partnerships in place it is gaining acceptance for high-volume applications, particularly in print and mail environments.  Read more »

Transaction Printers Are the Leading Adopters of High-Speed Continuous-Feed Process Color Digital

Who is buying high-speed continuous-feed process color printers? Early evidence indicates that it’s transaction printers. About 200 print engines in this class were placed around the world in 2009 but it hasn’t been entirely clear which environments have been most likely to buy them. It was my assumption that the quality and running cost capabilities of these devices made them attractive to transaction, direct mail, and some publication environments but I wondered whether that was really the case. I decided to look at the public announcements of companies that have placed such products to see what this said about market preferences. Read more »

HP and Pitney Bowes Add a 22-Inch Web Product to their Product Portfolios

Today at IPEX HP previewed the T200, a 22-inch web width companion to the 30-inch T300 Inkjet Web Press. The T200, which is capable of color speeds of 200 feet per minute (875 color letter images per minute) and black speeds of 400 feet per minute (1,750 black letter images per minute), will be formally announced at Graph Expo and will become available in 2011. Though the T200 builds on many components and technologies used in the T300, it is not a slimmed down T300, but instead a new design that uses an innovative paper path that prints both sides of the web without using a turnbar. The product will also be used by Pitney Bowes as the print engine for the new IntelliJet 20.

Supporting CMYK plus a fifth color (in addition to the heads that apply the bonding agent), the T200, like the T300, uses a tight web design. Instead of two separate print engines the T200 has two imaging areas within a single integrated device. The configuration shown at IPEX prints the four process colors plus the bonding agent. There is space for another color in the device and HP said that it would be adding MICR capability at a later date. Both HP and Pitney Bowes expect the device to be “plug compatible” as a replacement to monochrome toner-based devices where the user is looking to move to color and mixed color and black & white workflows.

Pitney Bowes and HP Sign Distribution Agreement for Inkjet Web Press

By now you will most likely have seen the press release about Pitney Bowes alliance with HP. In short, on Friday September 11th Pitney Bowes announced that it would enter the business of selling digital print technology through a strategic alliance with HP. Pitney Bowes said that its new IntelliJet solution would leverage HP’s Inkjet Web Press and a Pitney Bowes mail finishing system as part of a full system that also includes process control and management for capabilities like software transformations from AFP/IPDS, Metacode, and LCDS, as well as service and support capabilities that will leverage thousands of employees responsible for Pitney Bowes mailing systems. The target list price is not to exceed $4 million including the printing system, finishing, and appropriate workflow. Read more »
