Generations have a significant influence on consumers’ digital and mobile photography habits. According to InfoTrends’ lasted report, Digital and Mobile Photography in 2015: Millennials vs. Gen X and Boomers, older Millennials, age 23-34 years old, are the most photo-active group when it comes to use of a digital camera and the number of photos taken. On the other hand, young Millennials, age 15-22 years old, are most likely to use a smartphone as their primary camera and capture the most photos on their phones.
When it comes to sharing mobile photos on social networks, there are some dramatic differences between generations. Facebook was used by almost everyone who posted digital camera photos to a social network, but its usage was not as high among mobile photographers. This may be because of the variety of other apps that are available to share photos from mobile phones. Some, like Instagram and Snapchat, are designed as mobile-only platforms.

As more people share their photos online, fewer people opt to print their photos. Social networking sites have become the destination for many of our photos. But can social media really be to blame for the declining print market? It might be fair to say that the photo print market was in trouble the moment photography went digital. For some years consumers persisted with printing habits adopted from the analogue era. However it seems inevitable that digital would eventually get the best of prints.

It’s been a rough week for startups in the photo aggregation space. On Tuesday, November 5, Everpix notified users that it was shutting down. Today, November 8, Linea made a similar announcement. While there may be a silver lining for Linea (the shutdown letter to users says that its “core technology will be deployed in a new platform in the future”), there was no such optimism coming from Everpix. Its demise is well documented in this article on The Verge.
This news comes in the wake of Shutterfly’s recent beta launch of ThisLife, its new “Enhanced Cloud Service” for gathering and organizing photo and video content from multiple sources. Read more »

Yesterday, seemingly without warning, Facebook launched an iPhone app called Camera. With it, users can take pictures, apply editing filters, share them with other users, and “like” and comment on others’ pictures. If you’re thinking that this sounds a lot like Instagram, you’re right. If you’re thinking that Facebook has re-branded and re-released Instagram just six weeks after announcing its agreement to acquire the company for a cool $1 billion, you’re wrong. That deal hasn’t even closed yet, and Facebook Camera was reportedly in development before that news broke in early April.

The digital camera market is fast approaching a new milestone. According to InfoTrends’ estimates, the one-billionth digital camera will be produced this month. That is a lot of cameras produced since the first consumer modelsÂ launched in the 1990’s. Congratulations!

Facebook will be making the largest acquisition in its history when it acquires the incredibly popular Instagram photo app, a deal which was announced on Monday and should be completed in this quarter. Facebook has agreed to pay approximately $1 billion in cash and stock for Instagram, which has gained around 30 million users since it launched in January 2011. Instagram doesn’t have any significant sources of revenue, but reportedly closed a deal for $50 million in funding just last week (at a $500 million valuation — hello instant payoff!). Facebook will also acquire Instagram’s entire team of employees in the deal, which only consists of around a dozen people in the San Francisco area. Read more »

The future of photo publishing and merchandise looks bright. This year, InfoTrends conducted a number of in-depth studies that leads us to believe that the photo merchandise market will experience a bump in the number of consumers making photo merchandise purchases in the coming years. Part of this growth is going to come from the convergence of smartphone camera adoption, advancements in camera phone imaging, and the development of photo creation apps for the mobile phone.
In 2010, according to the U.S. Census, there were over 73.2 million people that fit into the age demographic of 18-34 years old (22% of the U.S. population). The Â 2011 InfoTrends U.S. Mobile Imaging End-User Survey highlights that close to 40% of this age demographic has a smartphone, in addition the 2010 InfoTrends U.S. Photo Merchandise End Customer Survey highlights that this age demographic is the largest segment of photo merchandise purchasers (with over 50% having made a photo merchandise purchase in the last 12 months). This combination of a high propensity to purchase photo merchandise combined with a high propensity to own a smartphone creates an atmosphere ready for an upsurge in consumers leveraging their mobile images to create and purchase photo merchandise.
