Google Unveils Daydream, Challenges Mobile VR Market

Google I/O 2016 – Google wasted no time starting its software-developer conference with a bang. Unveiled were several new updates, including a new version of Android, currently dubbed Android N. More impressive than even a comprehensive Android update, however, was the unveiling of Google Daydream, the company’s newest mobile virtual reality (VR) platform, which includes a new headset, controller, and app store interface.

Google Shutting Down Picasa

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the millions of smart devices that are connecting with each other, and we see it impacting and infiltrating the document solutions industry.  Last year, Google launched Brillo and Weave, the key parts of their new IoT platform, to enable easier device setup, phone-to-device-to-cloud communication, and user interaction from mobile devices and the web. Google is presenting Weave as “a solution for everyone:” OEMs, app developers, and end-users. With Weave, OEMs can build interoperable communications into their devices, build on Brillo, or add the Weave capability library to their existing OS.  App developers can use Weave to extend the reach of their iOS and Android apps by building one app to control multiple devices at home or work, and leveraging Google services such as voice actions. NY Times Introduces Virtual Reality to the Masses

On November 8, more than 1 million New York Times newspaper subscribers received an interesting gift with their Sunday paper – a Google Cardboard viewer. Google Cardboard is a simple device, made up of corrugated cardboard and a pair of plastic lenses, which turns any Apple or Android smartphone into a virtual reality (VR) viewing system.

Generational Gaps in Imaging

Generations have a significant influence on consumers’ digital and mobile photography habits. According to InfoTrends’ lasted report, Digital and Mobile Photography in 2015: Millennials vs. Gen X and Boomers, older Millennials, age 23-34 years old, are the most photo-active group when it comes to use of a digital camera and the number of photos taken. On the other hand, young Millennials, age 15-22 years old, are most likely to use a smartphone as their primary camera and capture the most photos on their phones.

When it comes to sharing mobile photos on social networks, there are some dramatic differences between generations. Facebook was used by almost everyone who posted digital camera photos to a social network, but its usage was not as high among mobile photographers. This may be because of the variety of other apps that are available to share photos from mobile phones. Some, like Instagram and Snapchat, are designed as mobile-only platforms.

Google’s “Mobilegeddon” and the Importance of Mobile-Friendly Web Design

This week, Google made changes to its mobile search algorithm, an event which the public dubbed “Mobilegeddon.” In the new algorithm, Google considers whether a website is “mobile-friendly” in ranking search results. Mobilegeddon is a wake-up call for many businesses that have either neglected mobile design or are not even aware that their websites are poorly designed.

While the new algorithm only affects searches on smartphones, businesses cannot afford to lose out on mobile, which already accounts for 60% of U.S. digital media time.[1] Earlier this year, comScore reported that mobile search accounts for 29% of all U.S. search activity, and 20% of that comes from smartphones. Various estimates put Google around 65-75% search market share, with 80-90% share in mobile search (thanks in large part to the Android OS). In fact, about half of all Google searches are believed to be mobile searches. Despite the apocalyptic hype around Mobilegeddon, this is neither the first nor the last update to Google’s algorithm. It is, however, the most significant update since 2011, when Google Panda began factoring the quality of web pages into search rank.  Read more »
