Graph Expo’s first visit to Orlando can be considered a qualified success, in part based on the low expectations that most exhibitors had for the show. It followed drupa, and a drupa year will always be a challenge for Graph Expo. What the future holds for this venerable show is up for discussion.
Let’s first consider attendance in Orlando. Thayer Long, the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC) president, said in a WhatTheyThink interview that the number of visitors (including booth staff) exceeded 13,000. This is down significantly from Graph Expo 2015 in Chicago, but is more or less in line with a reduced show that had at least 30% less exhibit space than in 2015.

These are InfoTrends’s top ten trends from PRINT 13:
- Who was there? Who wasn’t? Agfa’s departure from the show floor over the summer added another important company to the small cadre of vendors skipping the show (Heidelberg, Kodak, and Screen). In truth, Kodak actually did have a booth, a smallish one at the very back of the show floor, but it wasn’t what you would typically expect out of them. Of much greater importance was Kodak’s participation in others’ booths, including Konica Minolta (for Creo and Prinergy) and Adphos (for the Prosper Imprinting heads). And though the timing of Kodak’s emergence from Chapter 11 may have made a big presence unadvisable, it was nevertheless a missed opportunity to show off the new Kodak to its core audience. It is also clearly time for Kodak to name a new leader who will bring the market knowledge and vision for the next chapter in the company’s history. This has dragged on way too long. Read more »

If you are wondering why there has been a flurry of Print 09 announcements over the past day or so, there’s a reason. Today was the first day of a two-day Print 09 pre-briefing event called Media Days. Forty-nine press and journalists from all over the world are gathered in downtown Chicago to listen to fourteen organizations talk about their Print 09 plans. Eight companies presented their plans today and another six will present tomorrow. The organizations that are participating are DiMS!, EFI, GASC (the Graphic Arts Show Company), Henkel, Kodak, Konica Minolta, Lake Image Systems, manroland, MGI, Presstek, the Print Council, Ricoh, RISO, and Xerox.
