B2 Digital Presses: Market is Ramping Up in Europe, North America

The new generation of ‘B2’ format sheet fed presses from HP Indigo and several other suppliers has caused interest and excitement since their first unveiling two years ago. Today about 140 B2 presses are operating worldwide, and that total is growing. InfoTrends recently interviewed 40 current users of B2 presses and also surveyed 200 prospects for the technology in Europe and North America, in order to understand the status and outlook for B2 digital systems, which are available now from Delphax, Fujifilm, HP Indigo, and Screen, with more to come.  The results are charted and interpreted in the new report, Opportunities and Challenges in B2 Digital.

Making Heidelberg Fit for the Future

The announcement of annual results is always a good opportunity to provide an update on company strategy or present a new organisational alignment. The latest Heidelberger Druckmaschinen annual press conference, however, had far deeper implications than that.

A main message to investors, debtors, and the whole graphic arts community was that Heidelberg delivered on its promise of returning to profitability. Although the net revenue of €4 million was not particularly impressive, it is nevertheless an encouraging sign because it implies a turnaround. In the last five years Heidelberg has accrued a net loss of almost one billion Euros. While financial analysis will certainly have a feast on the numbers, the announced strategic reorganisation and several other organisational moves have important implications for the future of the company.

In the last year Heidelberg has conducted an in-depth analysis of the business areas the company is active in. They have been clustered into four strategic fields of action:
– Digital printing
– Service and consumables
– Sheet-fed Offset

Heidelberg: New CEO, New Digital Strategy

Heidelberg is the undisputed heavyweight champion of offset press manufacturing. Yet even a market leader has to acknowledge that offset press revenues are declining. Naturally, companies look for growing or new markets where they can create additional revenue streams, which is one big reason why all offset press manufacturers are exploring the possibilities of digital print.

On the 2nd of April, Heidelberg invited trade press and analysts to a “Digital Sneak Peek” event to talk about strategy and upcoming products for the newly constituted “Business Area Digital.” A new digital approach for Heidelberg is significant, since it echoes earlier Heidelberg initiatives such as Quickmaster DI, NexPress, and (most recently) Linoprint L, which was sold to Markem Imaje.

What is next for IPEX?

While it’s still too early to tell if IPEX 2014 is going to be a success for the exhibitors and visitors, I’d like to present my observations and a couple of thoughts on what may happen next.

First Impressions of IPEX 2014

Today IPEX 2014 opened its doors. IPEX has a four-year cycle and is timed to fall in the period between two drupa trade shows. IPEX made its name as a show where prospects could check the status of new products that had been “pre-announced” at drupa. It has ranked as one of the largest graphic arts trade shows in the world. After many years in Birmingham, 2014 is the show’s first year at the London Excel exhibition grounds. The move to the new location in London was significant, but that fact was overshadowed by the very well-publicized withdrawal of most of the major printing equipment manufacturers. In fact, over the past year there has been much discussion about whether IPEX would even take place at all. Well, it is taking place, but at a much smaller scale.

What Can Save P&S Cameras?

The digital camera market is in decline. Vendors are cutting back on their product range. Olympus and Fujifilm have announced that they will exit low end compact cameras. Even Canon has hinted following rumours that they will consider what to do with cameras that are priced under ¥20,000. Nikon seems to be the vendor that is planning to stay in for the long run, capturing low hanging sales as competitors exit.

InfoTrends’ forecast shows the trend clearly over the last 10 years. 2014 is shaping up to show continued steep decline. Changes in technology, the emergence of competing devices and perhaps a tendency for camera vendors to believe that the exceptional image quality found in cameras will protect them from competition can all be used to explain the shape of the curve below. Some Camera Shopping Advice for Friends (and Santa)

The lead up to the Holiday gift giving season is always a busy time as people start making out their gift giving lists or their own wish list for Santa. Being an analyst that tracks camera phones and digital cameras, this is also a busy time of year for me as I start getting emails, phone calls and text messages from friends asking me for camera buying advice. Since Thanksgiving I have already received many emails and texts from friends saying they need an opinion about what type of camera to buy.

I will admit I like being the one my friends and relatives turn to for an educated opinion about cameras. That role also carries some pressure with it, given the hundreds of camera models that can be found for sale from an online retailer or traditional brick and mortar stores. So as I prepare for the “what is the best camera to buy?” question I thought some of my ponderings would be helpful for others looking to answer the very same question.

Heidelberg-Fujifilm: Upshots for Digital in Packaging & Beyond

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) and Fujifilm Corporation announced last week that Heidelberg and Fujifilm’s Global Graphics Systems subsidiary have established a strategic partnership in the area of inkjet printing. For observers of digital printing for packaging, the news could be important because of the market role of each company: Heidelberg is one of the world’s top suppliers of offset presses for folding carton printing, as well as key workflow tools; Fujifilm is a major supplier of both offset and inkjet technology, and has leading role in CTP, workflow software and other pre-press technology. The partnership could result in Heidelberg’s marketing of an existing Fujifilm inkjet system for packaging or, longer term, the development of other printing presses based on Fujifilm technology.
