How are some of the best known designer clothing brands in the world using digital textile printing? If you want to know, you need to go to Italy, where last month about a hundred attendees met at the nHow hotel in Milan to exchange ideas, network, and hear about the latest in technologies and techniques at a conference sponsored by FESPA. FESPA, the driving force behind this event, has been promoting digital printing of textiles across the globe from Italy to Turkey and China.
Milan is one of the world centers for fashion with many brands headquartered in the city, including Armani, Etro, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dolce & Gabbana, Iceberg, Marni, Missoni, Moschino, Prada Trussardi, Valentino, Versace, and Zegna. About 50 kilometers to the north in the Como region, a large community of suppliers and manufacturers have been serving the fashion and décor industries in Europe and beyond for many decades. These companies as well as local associations helped to sponsor the event. A select number of potential customers from all over the world were invited to visit the SPGPrints factory in Boxmeer, Holland on a day trip out during FESPA Digital 2016 to see the singlepass PIKE up close. In addition, previews of the new Javelin multipass device were also given inducing much interest from the international group of printing companies. The factory tour also showed how the company that is also largely an ink manufacturer, has now completed its third phase of expansion, doubling its production space.
PIKE’s Archer Ink Jetting Technology Extends to Multipass Javelin
Following its official launch at ITMA 2015 and announcements preceding, (SPGPrints Gives ‘Sneak Preview’ of New Single-Pass Printing Solution) SPGPrints’ 1.85m single pass textile machine and a preview of the multipass Javelin were shown in action, up close and personal to the group of printing customers from Brazil, Columbia, Greece, India, Israel, and Pakistan among others, enabling insightful questions to be asked about their ability to perform high speed textile printing cost effectively. The PIKE’s ‘Archer’ ink conditioning and delivery system used in conjunction with the Fujifilm Dimatix Samba printheads is also being used in the new multipass Javelin with the same jetting distance to fabric expected to be achieved by launch in the summer of 2016.
In the PIKE the Archer Printbar jets ink up to 4mm from the fabric (as opposed to the usual 1.5mm), which helps to reduce ‘headstrike’ with the fabric and reduce what is described as the ‘printhead headache’ of costly print head damage and machine downtime. Linked to this a 2.5 year printhead warranty is offered which could even extend beyond this timeframe once customer experience is gained. The Archer name is taken from the Archerfish found in estuaries and mangroves of Australasia that forms a narrow groove in its mouth to jet out a long spurt of water to capture insects some distance away.

For centuries Milan and the lake Como region have been the trend setters for fashion and décor industries and a source of innovation in fabric printing. Thus it’s no surprise that the wave of digital printing technology that is emerging in many industrial markets is making significant impact on the region. With its early roots in the 1990’s, inkjet innovations found their way into Italian digital printing systems for fabric by companies like Robustelli. Today, this area is brimming with solutions from companies such as Aleph, F-tex, DURST, Kornit, Regianni, MS Printing systems and more. At the Canon for Business 2014 event in Poing, Germany and at the FESPA trade show in Munich last week, Canon Océ showed strong signs of progress in a variety of areas related to digital color printing through a series of announcements:
- High-speed color inkjet printing on standard coated offset papers’ Announced but not shown in Poing was a new inkjet system that Canon Océ representatives say can print on a range of offset paper stocks, including coated ones, without the use of bonding agents or primers. The solution, according to Canon, can accomplish this due to its high resolution, small ink droplets, dryers, and a special aqueous pigment ink formulation. The Canon Océ ImageStream 3500 runs at up to 160 meters per minute (525 feet per minute) at 1,200 x 600 dot per inch resolution on a 750-millimeter (30-inch) web. (The device can also run at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, though at half the speed of 1,200 x 600.) Canon expects the product to be available at the beginning of 2015. InfoTrends will learn more about this product soon (Canon hosted analysts, including InfoTrends’ Ralf SchlÅ‘zer, in Tokyo last week), but for now, it’s intriguing to consider that a vendor has come up with a solution to address standard coated offset papers without inkjet treatments of any kind. Though inkjet has been a hot topic since 2008 (remember the ‘inkjet’ drupa?), it is hard to underestimate the continuing impact inkjet is having across all areas of the graphic arts. I think 2013 marks an interesting turning point. Inkjet is everywhere from document printing to labels & packaging to decorative to functional and 3D printing.
Gartner Hype Cycle
3D printing had to be one of the most talked about topics of 2013 and jetting technologies are the key behind many 3D printing implementations (though in this case they are jetting materials rather than inks). That being said, in my opinion 3D printing has reached what Gartner likes to call the ‘Peak of Inflated Expectations’ and others have described as ‘Irrational Exuberance.’ The way some people talk about 3D printing you’d think that before long you’ll be 3D printing your beer complete with the bottle (with a label on the outside and a cap on top).

Over the past couple of days here at FESPA 2013 we’ve had a great opportunity to get a glimpse at the future of industrial printing. Many times Tim and I were approached by customers and vendors alike the industrial printing topic is top of mind. However producers as well as vendors define industrial printing in ways that center on applications their products produce. Some consider packaging, laminates, textiles, and others ceramic tiles as industrial applications. But let me offer another perspective, an industrial application is one where a transition from short run custom printing for pilot projects, or prototypes is converted to a manufacturing process that integrates management, workflow, and an integrated digital printing solution that is used for full production runs. The big tennis tournament Wimbledon is on here in London this week, and it is also FESPA (Federation of European Screen Printing Associations), which every year is one of the biggest events on the global wide format signage and graphics industry calendars. This year FESPA is being held at the London EXCEL center and I’m particularly excited about FESPA because InfoTrends is a research partner of the FESPA organization and we have, once again, developed a very strong body of new industry research called The Worldwide Survey 4. This study takes the temperature of the signage and graphics markets in a number of ways including issues such as buying expectations and technology investment plans. Read more »

Fespa Digital was held last week and the overarching theme was workflow for wide-format. While the single biggest launch at Fespa was the Mimaki JV-400 with its Latex or solvent UV ink options (see Tim Greene’s recent blog here for more information), the area where there were the most announcements and developments was in the workflow space. Wide-format has long lagged small format digital, and for that matter analogue print in the sophistication of its workflow. Recent developments show it is catching up at least and may even be overtaking those sectors.
At Fespa new products were announced by GMG, SAi, Esko, ONYX and Xanté, while other established wide-format workflow vendors such as Caldera refreshed some products for SGIA in the USA at the end of last year and plan further developments around Drupa in Germany this May. Read more »

Last week FESPA announced that it is co-locating its introductory show here in North America along with Graphics of the Americas (GOA) in Miami in 2011. The co-located show will be called FESPA Americas. There are those who say, and I have been one of them, that there are already too many trade shows in the wide format business because there are North American events such as ISA and SGIA along with GlobalShop, IRgA, PMA and other trade shows that serve particular segments.
