RISO Announces New Inkjet Products at Dealer Event

RISO has had high-speed inkjet in its ComColor line since 2005. At its recent Americas dealer event (May 18-19 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas) it announced product line updates as well as some production-oriented news for the upcoming drupa trade show (May 31 to June 10 in Dusseldorf, Germany). RISO’s ComColor products have always straddled the line between office use and light production. With the announcement of these two new offerings the company is differentiating the product family to target the products to the right customers.

The new inkjet products are the GD9630 and the FW5230. RISO calls the GD9630 “Professional Inkjet” or “Pro-Jet” while it uses the term “Business Inkjet” or “Biz-Jet” for the FW5230:

The Top 10 drupa 2016 Exhibitors by Booth Size

Note: This blog has been updated because additional information revealed that Canon and Landa were in a virtual tie for the third and fourth positions.

One good way of gauging a vendor’s marketing spend for a trade show is to see how much show floor space it has. Over the years, InfoTrends has measured booth size for shows like Graph Expo, Print, and drupa. With drupa 2016 less than a month away, we decided to repeat the exercise. This is how it works: we take measurements from the show floor map (in this case, the interactive drupa 2016 one at www.drupa.com). Then wherever possible we confirm this ranking through public statements or private confirmations from the exhibitors. We do our best to rank this as accurately as possible, but keep in mind that these are InfoTrends’ calculations, not official numbers. The drupa organizers do not publish a list of top vendors by booth size.

Frankly Speaking: Drupa is All About Hope

Drupa is the largest print-related exhibition in the world. It is a cross between a world’s fair and the storming of the Bastille. It is the place where new printing technology is introduced. And much of that technology is years away.

The first thing that hits you is the sheer size of it all. It takes almost an hour to walk from one side of the messe (fairgrounds) to the other (well, at my age it does). There are the equivalent of 20 buildings filled with every kind of printing and related device on earth. And there were 170,000 people from all over the world by the mid-point of the show.

The day before the formal opening is when Heidelberg (HEI) has their traditional press conference. But they were usurped by Landa, a company that revealed a new nano graphic printing technology. In fact, HEI is partnering with Landa on a future printing device.

Prediction: The Top drupa 2012 Stories

I could be wrong. After all, the show doesn’t start for two weeks, but I think these will be the top stories at drupa:

  1. Benny Landa — Whether Landa Labs shows market-ready products or early tech demos doesn’t really matter. This will be a drupa remembered for the show that Benny Landa put on. Is it ready for prime time? We won’t know until May. One mystery that should be solved by then is why their press releases refer to “ink ejectors” rather than inkjet heads (like every other inkjet system vendor does). Could it be that they are doing something different than using inkjet heads to apply ink to paper? Wait and see. Read more »

The Top 10 drupa 2012 Exhibitors by Booth Size

One interesting aspect of a company’s market impact is how much it is willing to spend on trade shows. Booth size, while not an exact measure of spending, does provide insight into a company’s level of investment. InfoTrends has explored this topic on a number of different occasions, most recently in a blog on Graph Expo 2011 called “Tracking the Digital Market through Graph Expo Booth Space.” With drupa 2012 right around the corner I decided to conduct a similar exercise. Here’s how we came up with the rankings. We based these on the show floor map that is displayed on the drupa 2012 web site and confirmed them where possible by public statements or private confirmations with the vendors. Keep in mind that this is an InfoTrends calculation, not official numbers from the drupa 2012 organizers.

Benny Landa’s Secret Ink

Over the past few months rumors have been swirling around in regard to Benny Landa’s plans for drupa. Most of it has been talk, but more details are now coming to light. The Landa Labs web site, which has been on line for quite some time, added a note recently that Landa Digital Printing, developer of next-generation digital printing technology targeted at commercial, packaging, and publishing markets, would show a lineup of ‘digital nanographic printing presses’ at drupa 2012. The drupa 2012 web site shows a sizeable booth in Hall 9 for Landa Digital Nanographic Printing.

Next came an article called “The Secret Ink of Benny Landa” that appeared last week in the Hebrew-language magazine Calcalist (which translates to “Economist”). The article is in Hebrew, but a Google translation and help from InfoTrends’ Tel Aviv office unveils a few more details about some of the ‘Big Things from Small Particles’ that Landa has in mind. The technology to be shown at drupa is facilitated by an ink with very small pigment particles that Landa believes to be more durable and economical than any type of ink and that can adhere to any substrate. Few specifics are mentioned about what the products will look like, but it does appear that the inks will be applied by inkjet heads.

Heidelberg Puts Off Digital Print Partnership Decision(s) Until 2011

The German web site print.de reported today that Heidelberg will not make any decisions about digital print partnerships until early 2011. The news came during a presentation to European print industry magazine editors. Back in May at its IPEX press conference Heidelberg had said that it was searching for digital print partners (emphasis on the plural) and would make some decisions before year’s end. We’ve been waiting since then. Graph Expo passed. What a great opportunity to gain the spotlight even though Heidelberg didn’t have a booth there! Then early in December Océ and manroland announced a partnership, and still there was no news from Heidelberg. We’d been hoping for a Christmas news release, but that will have to wait. And it may be a bit of a wait. print.de reports that a likely time for the announcement could be the Digimedia show in April in Dusseldorf. Read more »
