Lytro Runs A Sneak Play – New Features Without a New Camera

In June 2011, Lytro unveiled a revolutionary camera that tossed much of what we knew about depth-of-field out the window. Using a new “light field” sensor, the camera captures color, intensity, and direction of light rays in its field of view. The result is pictures that can be “refocused” at any time after capture.

Connectivity and “Smart” – Most Interesting Camera Features

Just because the camera phone — you know those handy cameras on feature phones and smartphones – has become the everyday camera for many people doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom for traditional cameras. In the most recent InfoTrends Digital Camera End User study we found that digital cameras are still being used to take more photos on average than a camera phone and used more often for special occasion photos. Cameras Get Smart – Nikon goes Android

Smart, meet camera. Camera, meet…Android, apps, connectivity, Facebook, GPS, Instagram-like in-camera editing…also known as The Future. The new Nikon Coolpix S800c says to the smartphone “Anything your camera can do, mine can do better.”

What is it?

The Coolpix S800c is Nikon’s first “Smart Camera” to combine its camera imaging expertise with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), Google’s mobile platform. This is not the first smart camera to be announced this year. At the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, Polaroid announced the SC1630 smart camera, a 16 MP Android-based camera. However, the camera has not launched yet, and it is questionable whether it will ever make it to market.

Cameras are facing tough competition from ever-present camera phones. It can be difficult for a new point & shoot camera to attract attention in a sea of smartphone and tablet introductions. Fortunately, digital camera vendors can stand out by introducing new models with sought-after features like rugged, go-anywhere construction, and connectivity. In the InfoTrends’ 2011 Digital Camera End-User Study, respondents were presented with current and futuristic camera features and asked to rank the importance of each feature. Connectivity and waterproof capabilities were two of the more interesting features that respondents cited. This week, Olympus and Fujifilm introduced new camera models that address these demands.
